Walking a mile in someone else's shoes |
|
I can't do it--heels hurt my back too much.
What I could do with a day in one of THEIR shoes--imagine the fun dissolving all their 401Ks and bank accounts, and sending tons of money to charities all over the world, or to Democratic candidates.
Imagine being in one of their homes--all the "godly" paraphenalia around that could be given to goodwill!!
Ah--the plasma TV in the bedroom--some of the patients at the vet's hospital would LOVE that in the rec room!
Signing over the deeds to all their excess homes to Habitat for Humanity or to people who really need homes of their own!!
Goodness gracious--all that gym equipment!! The state hospital really does need some new physical therapy equipment!
Or how about that skiing equipment? Some wood for a warm fire for some homeless people.
Ooops--back to my own life. Too bad--too much to do, and not enough time!!

That is not what "walking a mile in someone's shoes" means. It doesn't mean that you gain control over all of the property and assets of the person.
It means that you bear the burdens and feel the feelings of the person to understand what they are going through.
No. Walking a mile in someone's shoes is not a license to steal.

I was creating a fantasy, seeing what someone could actually do if places were switched! It was supposed to be an entertainment, not something serious. Why do you think I put it in the lounge?
Did you ever see the movie, Sneakers, with Robert Redford? If you have, you know what I was attempting to do. If you haven't, then see it. It's entertaining enough, but the joke of the day was getting into big corporations money and transferring it to those organizations that needed it most.
It's sort of like what could you do with all that repuke money?
But lately, it doesn't seem like many people have a sense of humor anymore around here.

2. I have those fantasies, too. |
|
I'd turn churches into something useful, put a stop to corporate animal farming, convert all the assets of big Republican donors into progressive causes, etc. etc.

4. Churches would be good to make into |
|
like one room shelters, with some of the rooms made into common areas, like a large living room, and a big enough kitchen to feed everybody.
Did you ever see Heaven can Wait with Warren Beatty? When he got the rich guy's body, he turned him into a philanthropist and helped save the dolphin!

8. Yeah, that sounds like what I had in mind for churches. |
|
Some people would say, well, many churches feed the hungry now, and I guess that's true, but in my ideal world they wouldn't dangle the Jesus carrot in order for those poor people to eat (hell, in my ideal world there wouldn't be any religion, at all).
I did see Heaven Can Wait but that was probably close to 30 years ago so I don't recall that scene. That's cool though.

5. A pity more people don't act locally in protest. |

Whatever. I like and want my job, so I can afford all those things. (You do know I just bought the "Buck Rogers" DVD set?)
And most DUers who go to these things undoubtedly did their homework beforehand; to ensure that their company's policies don't state your jobs can rightfully be terminated if you're arrested, et cetera, et cetera...

6. Dont criticize someone until you walk a mile in their shoes |
|
Then you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I had no shoes.
Then I met a man who had no feet.
I said, "My friend — can I have your shoes?"
