I'm pretty sure it is...Patrick McCabe, is the author, I think. There's a movie of that book too. It's disturbing, but really good.

You'll love it. It's similar to what you describe--A kid in Ireland loses his mom, becomes a hooligan, is haunted by death and the end of the world, goes kinda nuts, etc. It too is funny and sorrowful, but it has a sweetness to it as well.

Also, in The Butcher Boy Sinead O'Connor plays the virgin Mary and Stephen Rea (of Crying Game fame) plays the grown up Francie Brady character.
