I love seeing plants grow from tiny seedlings. It's therapy for me to play in the dirt.

I'm doing a Disaster Recovery exercise over the next few days for work (though it really turns into an exercise in endurance as about ten of us will see who can stay awake the longest and maybe even finish the exercise, last year I went 48 hours and had to get a cab home) I must get some sleep before it begins.

If not, I most certainly wish I had been (born 1951). That smile, personality, and energy - well, I am stunned, my dear, and if we had met, I promise that I would have been a rakish charmer, at least in my own mind (it wasn't that difficult in those days). Of the type who often talked to you, and not with depth (You know the type). Long ago and far away, and lovely memories. Now, we (she and I) go to farmers' markets on Sunday mornings, after reading the New York Times and cursing George Bush, with a great cup of coffee, listening to Mendelssohn, and when the time of year is right, sitting out on the deck, with the three dogs, and enjoying the brevity of life and the greenery and who cares, we are at the here and now. But still, given all the remarkable memories, and the fights for right from JFK to Kerry, and all the puffery, my reaction to your post remains what I initially and immediately thought: You are hot. So shoot me. Thanks for reminding us guys from your time that we are still alive, and we don't need Viagra to appreciate your company. Or the grace you bring to the world.

So, I am with you, and the ghost of Woody Hayes, and Earle Bruce (wait - he is not dead!). But, I was simply struck by both your photo and your commentary. And the memories. And any time I get to compliment someone of your grace, beauty and thoughtfulness, from my era, I will do it. Every time. Sometimes I grow tired of railing about politics at DU; while on the side of the Angels, as I grow older, I seek other priorities. Oh my, indeed. Thanks for being one of those gentle priorities. Too bad it was a newspaper photo. I was ready to take on the world then. I skipped a year in HS and graduated when I had just barely turned 17. Life has played fast and loose with me the last 10 years, but I refuse to go down without a fight. I also refuse to become callous, rude or bitchy simply because I have reason to. It's just not who I am.

You have the very great advantage of beauty, grace and communications skills, and no doubt others who love you, and perhaps you are not as kind to yourself as you would be to others. You were beautiful in 1978, and that's not supposed to matter now, but it does. Because it is part of your life. And who you are. I have spent more time on your post than any of about 6,000 here at DU, but, what the hell. Your photo reminded me of another time. This is me as a high school drop out and an avid rock and roll fan in the late 1980s with three Norwegian women I met.


This is me in 2004 after leaving Phoenix for a cross-country trip back to Miami to volunteer for John Kerry and MoveOn. Yes, that did a lot of good. I drove my car up to the edge of the Grand Canyon and set up my camera on a tripod. I ended up with two flat tires.





This is me in May 2006 in Havana with a Cuban women I met. Yes, I'm still a sucker for foreign women.
