americans are inconsiderate, self-centered slobs...elaborate...
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 07:23 PM by QuestionAll
two things that tend to piss me off-
i went to the grocery store to buy some corn-on-the-cob...why do people think that it's ok to rip open the husks? it really bugs me to see some dullard just ripping at the cobs, throwing some back, keeping others(i honestly don't know what they're looking for- or what they find that they don't like in their "reject" pile). I never rip the corn open in the store, and i've never had a bad ear, either.

escalators in america- why do people treat them like some type of carnival ride..? it's a moving stairway it's entirely permissible to walk- and if you choose not to walk- please do as they do in the rest of actual civilizd world, and stand to the left, so people can walk up the left side.
it's no wonder there are so many fat-asses in this country, when people don't even have the initiative to climb a flight of stairs...or actually- half a flight of stairs, when you take into consideration the movement of the escalator.

2. Well, I agree with your general premise about Americans, but
the corn thing is kinda justified. Looking for tight rows of kernels, not dried out or missing, etc. That's just a way to judge which produce to pick; I don't think it's wrong.

5. go to europe and try it...
it is wrong- is it ok to peel bananas to pick ones that aren't bruised inside?
when you buy a carton of strawberries- do you open the carton and take out the bad ones and replace them with fresh?
do you peel onions to make sure that they aren't bruised? how about artichokes?
i like mangoes- is it ok for me to peel them in the store to make sure that i'm not getting one with bruises on the inside?

10. My dad was in Germany on business many years ago.
He walked into the produce section of a market and picked up an apple. He saw that it had a hole in the side and started to put it down. The shopkeeper saw this, ran over, and personally escorted him to the register to pay for it. Apparently he learned quickly that things are done differently over there.

12. Well
Bananas -- You can usually tell from the outside. I just choose the ones without brown spots (I like them slightly green).

Strawberries -- I don't pick out the bad ones, but I do look through the plastic to make sure no moldy strawberries are visible.

Onions -- I just check them to see if there are any soft spots on them.

Mangoes -- Pretty much every mango I've ever purchased has been firm and unripe; I just wait for them to ripen.

Artichokes -- Dunno. I don't buy them frequently enough.

But with corn, you can't tell anything about it unless you pull back the husk.

14. Jeez.
I've even heard produce people in supermarkets say it's fine with them if people taste a grape or two before buying. Many people smell the fish to make sure it's fresh. It's just a way to choose the product that's freshest. I don't think it's wrong. My gawd, with all the self-centered and inconsiderate actions taken by Americans (driving Hummers, for example), this is a silly one to fixate on.

26. "corporations pawn off faulty food"...
ummm...if an ear of corn is bad- you really should be blaming mother nature.

and you know what- if by some odd chance you DID get a bad ear- if you bring it back to the store, they'll gladly exchange it.

i guess that for some people- it's easier to fuck with the grocer's bottom line, and in such- everyone's grocery prices, and then rationalize their ill-mannered behaviour, than it is to participate in a civil society.

18. Well, tasting a grape affects profits less than pulling apart the corn.
Once some yahoo does that, the corn starts to go bad faster. I was a buyer for a produce department. It does affect the store when idiots do this. If the husk looks fresh, then the corn inside should be fine. Take a chance. Live a little. Buy the corn unseen. It'll be like the prize in a cracker jack box when you cook it.

4. How's this for inconsiderate?
The other day I was picking my daughter up after school. I arrived early and parked where I always park - just behind a row of well-marked spaces reserved for the disabled. Every afternoon I watch several parents with disabled children use those spaces. Anyhow, I'm parked there, minding my own business, when a woman in a new lexus pulls up next to me and tells (not asks) me to "move back" so she can squeeze in front of me and block access to those spaces. I politely point out that "those spaces are needed for parents of disabled students and can't be blocked." She ignores me and pulls in anyway. When the mother of a disabled child pulls up a few minutes later and asks her to move, she refuses. The mother of the child who uses a walker then had no choice but to double park, blocking traffic, until her son appeared with his aide. Meantime the ignoramous in the Lexus didn't budge. It was horrible.

way since I was a child. I'm 35, and, as I said before, I'll continue to teach my children (both well behaved, accomplished children) to do the same on an escalator... Lakeside mall actually has a sign on the bottom of their escalators telling people, for safety's sake, not to run or walk.

but even in the places in england (and most of europe) where they DON'T have the signs- people just do it naturally.

There are two things you should never do on the subway:

corn in the store. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't, depending on the amount of time I have available. And, on edit, they've always provided them...since their inception. I sure as hell don't want wormy corn,

Number 2, We were taught (in school even) as children NOT to run or walk up the escalator...that we'd get there in due time.

That said, I've got more important things to worry about in life, like the ass who slammed his cart into my car instead of putting it in the cart holder.

woman out of the way to get to the top of the escalator in such a goddamned hurry. The inconsiderate attitudes of the people who rush up the escalator as if their lives depended on it blows my mind. Your post, and it's complete lack of common sense and the reality of what constitutes bad behavior blows my mind. I'll take the raising I had at the hands of my strict, but caring parents anyday over what it is your serving. Manners? You? Ha.

Now, the post another DUer had about blocking off handicapped children? That's bad manners. Talking on a cell phone in a grocery store, library, doctor's office? That's bad manners. Cutting off merging traffic? Bad manners.

Escalators? yes!! Let's run right up them!!! That's excellent manners.

not to walk or run on our escalators here in MI. I don't know about where you live, but they usually run right alongside a set of stairs...for you, the offended over what is actually supposed to happen. Seriously, I think you need to take up the real bad behavior in the world...instead of making it up as you go along.

and, I will, thanks...Just as my mother and her mother did before her (back in the forties...when the grocer had a trashcan there as well).

And, on edit, It is FAR better to find oneself superior to others in every thread they post in ala Titanic. I'll take real people thank you, instead of your put upon, high brow snobbery.

Tonight I watched "The Notebook" and found it rather good. I'm sure that makes you cringe. :eyes:

Where the hell do you get off?

Some Americans are rude. There are rude people all over. I've lived in the Netherlands....and as proud as I am of my Dutch heritage, I can also tell you that the Dutch are incapable of standing in line and will push you out of the way to get onto a bus or train. But you sure as hell won't catch me making rude sweeping statements about the moral character of all citizens of the country.

Not sure what your point was.

40. A word about corn...
I work in produce. I know.

1) Most people haven't a clue WTF they're looking for. Some do, about 98% don't.

2) DO NOT peel back entire sepels (leaves). This hurries the drying of the kernals and hastens the problem that people are avoiding.

3) If there is mold on the silk, don't bother picking it up because it's likely the kernals are moldy too.

4) Seperate two sepels and peak between them. Basically like peaking through two slats of Venetian Blinds, rather than ripping the blinds off the wall.

5) You can actually feel the condition of the kernals near the end of the stalk of corn, and don't necisarily need to go through the sepels.

6) Many stores sell pre-shucked corn, no sepels, no silks. If it's that big of a deal, buy that stuff.
