Soccer is a dipshit "sport"
Players go down screaming when they are touched. Often they are taken off on a STRETCHER just to bounce back 30 seconds later and rejoin the game. And clearly the refs dictate the outcome - foul here, yellow card, red card. I try to watch, but it is such a joke.

Thank goodness we limit the game to schoolgirls under the age of 12 here in the US.

9. MLB does a good job
NFL and NBA not so much. But - watch the soccer WC - the refs have more control over the game than any sport I have ever watched. That is a large part of the FIFA disrespect. Soccer is a joke. Possibly worse than boxing.

16. Good take
I'm just ragging on soccer because I think the US is getting jobbed by the refs. If I weren't interested I wouldn't have been watching. But I truly think that the refs have way too much power regarding the outcome.

56. You're right, there.
That ref is the worst one in the WC. And the WC has made policy that refs should be more strict. That's wrong. But it's still a beautiful game.

30. It isn't for everyone...
What I find to be the best part of soccer is the ebb and flow of momentum over a 90 minute game. One team controls play for a while, and then all of a sudden, the other team pounces and starts creating chances. The best part is that you can't call timeout, and you can't rotate players in and out. The players have to work through it. I enjoy basketball, but I hate the strategic timeouts to stop momentum - I would rather watch the athletes try to dig down and fight through it. There is something very unathletic about being able to stop the game just because you are getting your butt kicked.

7. It's not the scoring, it's the scoring chances...
...it's the impending build up as a run develops toward the goal, only to be thwarted. I never really got soccer until I watched it with people who understood the nuance and could explain it. Baseball is considered boring to some, but if you know the nuances, it's actually quite mentally challenging.

10. Agreed on both counts
I enjoy watching both football/soccer and baseball for the nuances (and hot players). :-)

Gotta love that there's no commercials in soccer though; no wasted time, no stepping in and out of the box to delay the game and shake up the defense... 45 minutes a half of pure action.

With constant running you have to be at absolute peak physical shape. And look very closely at the falls they take. It Hurts. Sure the worst of the pain will wear off after a minute or two, but I'd like to see you, or me, or anyone in this Lounge take hits like that and walk it off like it's nothing.

Ahhh, what am I saying. Enjoy your American (Or perhaps Canadian... I don't know) viewpoint.

as far as I can tell, "soccer"/football is just as popular with little boys as it is with little girls in the U.S. I wonder if in a decade or so it will have more of a following here (?) Although ... people have been saying that for years.

I dunno -- I can't get into either "soccer" or American football. The only sport I semi-enjoy watching is baseball, which millions of people find to be a crashing bore

34. I don't care
I've seen enough of it from the sidelines to have a better feel for it than the average fan. I don't think a helmet hit can be as violent as you imply when it's part of the blocking strategy.

Besides — soccer, rugby and Australian football players smack heads all the time — and they don't wear helmets.

You start a thread calling soccer "dipshit" and "a girl's sport" and you get what you ask for. Why not go off on baseball and piss off even more people while you're at it? Hey, throw in golf and gymnastics and ice skating and curling. Offend as many people as you can.

28. It is the culture of the sport
The same way people flop in basketball at the first sign of contact trying to draw a charge.

Players are trying to embellish the severity of the fouls to try to influence the referee - and sometimes steal some rest time for themselves and their teammates (since they can't call time outs). It is just what they do. It's gamesmanship. Refs sometimes give yellow cards for diving in the penalty area

I think it was the only time I saw a guy get hurt enough that he couldn't be taken from the field. And when you consider guys often land on their heads after a mark, that ain't bad.

But, kee-rist — they kept playing right around the guy. I couldn't believe that.

How long is the average footy career, y'know? And is it played in schools there, or is it just club and pro teams?

43. Footy is played from about 8, I think, but mainly just touch at that stage

Until about 15 you are much more likely to play touch, but then the interested ones play tackle from about then. (Touch is the same as normal, but you merely have to tag them... it's kind of like the 'kids version' and much more acceptable at schools)

The average footy career? I dunno.

If you get the fundamentals of soccer it's really enjoyable. It's like chess with people and it's very interesting that way. Besides, soccer is a universal sport. It might have gotten very money-oriented on a higher level but basicly it's still the "people's sport" and that is what makes the WC an amazing event.

You have to be very sharp and perceptive to be able read the game and be at the right spot at exactly the right time every time. The best footballers are also the most intelligent. It's incredibly difficult to be at the top in this sport with everything it requires.

Playing a match is painful; there's no notable armor and the impacts are a lot less expectable. Anybody who thinks the "contacts" to be light has never played a game. It hurts like hell.

Also if there's the possibility of an injury, it has to be checked right away. A missed thing can cause an end to the career.

67. I agree.
It's a joke of a game. No action, very little scoring and all those fake injuries. The ball spends as much time or more out of play than in play. As I've said before it's obvious why there are so many drunken riots at these games, there is nothing else to do there.

68. Well, for people in most of the world there's lot of action.
We can't see any action in AMerican Football and Baseball; nor any beauty in Basketball. Soccer has action and beauty - it's perfect.

As to "so many" riots: not more than in any other sports drawing crowds in the millions ballpark.

69. Really? At what other sport events do people riot?
I've never seen a riot at any sporting event here. An isolated fight or two but never a full blown riot with people getting killed and shit.

70. nor will you with soccer

There were terrible incidents in the past, possibly in the future, but it has more to do with underlying problems in the societies. Those riots are started by highly organized groups - there's nothing spontaneous or "normal fan behavior" about them.
Chess would do just as well as soccer as reason to do those riots. And IIRC - there are plenty of examples for riots after non-soccer wins in the US.

Considering that we are looking at crowds with well above 500,000 people (most drunk) during the world cup, the incidents are isolated; no serious injuries nor real riots. That's a lower violence rate for watchers than any other sport; it's even lower than the usual number with no sport going on. It simply is a very entertaining game; just idiots think about using it for a riot.

72. "drunken riots"
Those are products of calculated rivalries. Some fans use soccer to act out local and nationalistic rivalries resulting from the past, previous wars and such. They do it because it matters so much to their pride. Rioters are a small minority, most can watch a game without getting into a brawl.

74. Well, the simple answer is not to watch it...
I'm sure it'll be out of business in a year or two now that you don't like it.

Of course, you wouldn't get quite so much attention doing that...
