I know a woman named Galadriel (is that how you spell that?). She works for the guy who cuts my hair. I named a parakeet that once but I never knew anyone named that before her.

It figures that when a real personal named "Aslan" shows up, he'd be a violent Muslim revolutionary. Just goes to show.

Aslan is from the Narnia books by C. S. Lewis.
Derivation, from a quick check, could be Persian or from the Turkic languages. Of course, it means "lion" & is a pretty fine name.

|
...but for some reason my wife objected
I have a co-worker who named his son Ender, which IMO is a pretty cool name. Based in fantasy but not too "wierd".

Don't give a kid a name that always needs explaining or makes the kid an object of teasing, or has a spelling that is odd or doesn't quite match the pronunciation.
Please.

...Was the name Robert Plant, lead singer of Led Zeppelin, gave to his dog, circa 1970. He even wrote a song about this dog, called "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp," from the album "Led Zeppelin III." In concert (but not on the album version) he typically shouted out "Strider!!" at the end of the song.

One of my best friends from high school named his son after his first Dungeon and Dragons character. It's not from LotR, but I think D&D is close enough in this context <g>.

It's not made up, i don't think, but they got "Briana" from "Brenna," or something like that. It used to entertain me to no end, even though I can't stand Star Trek. :P
