I don't like it. :(

1. That's a dog I'd stay WAY far away from. And keep my kids far from, too.
Coons take a lot of killing. Any dog that can do that one-on-one, well, I'd not be too comfortable around him either.

3. Exactly
The guy told me a story about how he watched, and how his dog was bleeding about the nose and face and could only attack for a few seconds at a time. But every time the racoon tried to get away the dog would attack again, regardless of the injury and pain to the dog.

Scary animal.

4. Ah, more than a bit scary. People in your neighborhood who have kids
need to know about this. I'm NOT joking.

2. Any dog that killed one of
my cats...

would be pushing up daisies in some pet cemetery.

5. I don't like cats. But I agree with you, nonetheless.
First cat that dog killed, it should have been gone.

7. Yes
If any animal were attacking my sweet little doggie I would finally have an excuse to use that .38 police special that I have slept with for the last 25 years. }(

11. Okay enough to not have put the dog down.
I think most, if not all, of the victims strayed into his backyard.

14. Sorry, it was a reference to the loose cat threads of days past.
The person you posted about is not someone I wanna know. x(

16. Oh, he is not a bad person . . .
. . . just maybe a little rough and unsophisticated. He never set out to train his dog to be mean or anything like that.

12. Two different issues. Cats who kill songbirds AND dogs who kill cats
are BOTH in need of control.

(PS: I think that there are MANY more problem cats than problem dogs. do you can come out from behind that stone wall; we're on the same side.)

13. Two same issues, I think. Related at least.
Both situations in need of control, agreed. :hi:

This is not directed at you, but I do not find the cop-out "it's natural" to apply to either sitch. And the owner that was refered to in the OP has got some huge issues.

As a kid we let our cats roam. I would never do that today. Nor would I let the dog roam, even though she sticks close to home no matter what. But my dog is agressive to other dogs. And being a German Shepherd Dog she has great strength. So I recognize that I need to make sure she is not left alone with any other fauna nearby. She will also herd running children, so I have to make adjustments for that. As for cats or coons that might wander into our yard it's not a problem. She's just not that fast. The wild bunnies are in the yard every night eating the grass without a care. I have to trap them to keep the damage under control.

Too many people are not.

17. So the cats are outside. What if the racoon killed the cat?
I'm not saying it's ok for a dog to kill cats, but there are inherent risks should you allow your cat outside - cars, wildlife, chemical hazards, etc.

18. That's why my kitties stay indoors.
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 11:02 PM by Brigid
Even if I had a house with a yard instead of an apartment, there are just too many hazards out there that they are not equipped to deal with.

19. You could buy an enclosure for your yard
So your cats can frolic safely.....if you can afford it.

If not, some composite I-don't-know-what-it's-called-but-it's-catproof stuff you put on the inside of picket fences will do the trick. If kitty can't climb the fence, it should be safe to allow the cats in the yard.
