Ack!! I Just Received A Jury Duty Notice.... |
|
My first time ever... in 27 years, I've never been called once for jury duty. I'm sure it will be interesting, BUT... I hope it's for something quick and simple.

1. I've been called once... |
|
... and it was a waste of time. They had the potential jurors (all 120 of us) in a big room with a few tables, lots of chairs, and a tv that only played the Jerry Springer Channel. :P I planned my sister's bridal shower for the six hours I was there. They didn't need any of us, so they sent us home at 2:30. It's a hard way to make $15. :P
Hubby has been called twice and was picked as an alternate once (didn't have to serve the first time). The trial was very short and ended at 5 PM that day, so he didn't have to do anything. :)

7. that has been my experience too |
|
(actually, I mean your hubby's experience.) I've been called in 4 times, once I had to decline because I was no longer a resident of that county. Twice I was sent home because we were not needed (trials postponed, more jurors than they needed, etc) and once I was chosen as an alternate but the trial was done at the end of the day and I was out by 4:00 p.m.
Maybe it's because I've had it pretty easy when I am called, but I never mind being called. I suppose if I had been on a jury for Michael Jackson or OJ, I'd have a different opinion.
I like our justice system. I think the whole jury of your peers and innocent until proven guilty and all of that are important aspects to our life, and if I can play a part of that, I'm all to willing to do so.

2. congratulations! You get to be part of the judicial process |
|
that makes this country great!
I hope it's short and sweet too, but I still thinks it's great that you're going to be a part.

4. I hope your jury duty stint will be quick and painless. |
|
Because it will mean less time for you away from here. :-)

6. If you have a college degree |
|
have ever volunteered anywhere, and have an opinion on almost anything they won't want you.
If you don't come across as passive, tractable, and simple one of the attorneys will not want you on the jury.

8. They'll reject you because you have a college degree? |
|
I did not know that.
I've never been summoned for jury duty.

9. Education apparently makes you a bad juror. |
|
It shows that you know how to think for yourself. No lawyer wants jurors to actually think for themselves.

And thinking about what they want to accomplish - why would they? They want as blank a slate as humanly possible so they can state their case without any outside influences.

12. I've never been asked to be a juror. Maybe the degree is why. |
|
I know a lot of fools with degrees; it shouldn't be a dealbreaker.

You might even think that a lawyer would want educated people on a jury. But laywers aren't known for taking risks.

14. It's terrible to be so cynical, isn't it? |
|
But it's more terrible that we are justified! I believe that, generally speaking, thinkers are frowned upon in this country.

16. What an odd generalization |
|
I've served on a jury, as has my brother and both of my parents. We all have college degrees and some of us have Masters.
And there's plenty of volunteering going on, and I assure you, we all have quite strong opinions.
Guess we must all come across as idiots though.

I just know that I've never ended up on a juror. When I have discussed this with friends who are lawyers they've told me that education, volunteer activity, and strongly stated opinions are common reasons people don't get picked. They have said "if you want to serve on a jury, act like you don't know anything or have any opinions."

10. I go, but I always get rejected. |
|
I know I could be a good juror, but they don't want me.
Okay, my feelings aren't really hurt, but something about me always spooks them.

15. I get rejected because I am brutally honest. I also know a lot of |
|
lawyers and judges.
One time I went up to the judge and said I took a visceral dislike of the defendant and there is nothing I can do to suppress the feeling. The Prosecutor said he saw no problem, but the defense attorney didn't like my honesty. I was sent home.
It seems that honesty is not the best policy if you want to sit on a jury. I want to do my duty, but it is hard to divorce oneself from that feeling side. If you can't, then you are doing a disservice to all involved. Jerks can be innocent of the crime.

|
I hope they don't need me so I don't have to go. I am on vacation next week and that's the last place I want to be.
I got called a few years ago and I went but I never saw the judge and I was dismissed.
