Me? New Monkees. Yes, the new version of The Monkees created in the mid-80s. There's some damn fine tunes on that CD, including one by Tom "Life Is A Highway" (or more appropriate for DU, "Lunatic Fringe") Cochrane.

1. Miles
I just listened to "Bitches Brew" for my first time some 3 weeks ago, and my being a standard 4/4 time rocker, it boggles my mind, even to the core, where I don't even know why it's so good, if that makes sense. All I know is that it sounds like Miles, Herbie Hancock, and John McLaughin(sp?) could lose the song at any moment, and yet, through every seemingly random time signature change and wandering tune, they never do!!! That, and I realize I am a horrible drummer.

3. Webb Wilder
Went to see him live a couple times a decade ago and enjoyed his shows. Never knew what happened to him. Found one of his CDs last week at a used record store and have been enjoying it tremendously, although my wife is getting a little tired of the incessant playing of that Human Cannonball song

5. Sonic Youth
I used to be a pretty big fan in high school and college (early 90s). They had a run of bad albums in the late 90s and so I wasn't listening to them nearly as much.

However, their last three albums have all been astonishingly good -- at times almost reaching the heights of their "classic" albums from the 80s. As a result, I've found myself listening to Sonic Youth -- both the new albums and the classics -- much more than I have in close to a decade.

10. Yep!
I just got it, so I've listened to it once so far, but I liked it quite it a bit. It follows nicely in the footsteps of the mellower, more mature sound of Sonic Nurse and Murray Street.

30. Thanks, me too, and I'm re-appreciating the hell out of Depeche Mode.
I am so proud to have been around while all that innovation with music was going on. The other day I heard "Cars" by Gary Numan called the 'very first techno song ever"...lol, during the nineties it was just 'that weird 80's song" like most of the music that I listened to back then.

I loved "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" back in the day. Spirit performed at our college back in 1974...a good time was had by all. :)

some of their lesser known songs are fabulous. For example, Radio GaGa.

Anybody know what exactly is Radio GaGa?

26. Me too.
Used to listen to them quite a bit when I was in high school. Never seriously. I've just now started up again. Freddy Mercury was one hell of a performer. LOVE Radio Gaga.

Right now my favorite has to be "Don't stop me now." Great song.

14. Kevin Gilbert, of Toy Matinee fame
He was working on an album called "Shaming of the True" at the time that he died. A few of his friends finished it after his death, and it turned out to be a very good one.

16. Don't laugh
Rush. The Canadian power trio with the vocalist only dogs can hear and the lyrics abstracted from the secret diaries of Ayn Rand.

I have this nephew I give guitar lessons to. (The good news is, everything he likes was recorded before he was born, so I know it, and together we can usually figure out how to play it.) So he came in one day playing this catchy riffy tune in D, clearly a power rock tune but with a lot of chords in root position on the neck. I barely recognized it as Rush, and which tune it was I was off by three albums. (It was "Fly by Night," and I misidentified it as "A Farewell to Kings.") So we worked on it for a bit, then I pulled out all my old Rush LPs (I have the first 14!) and played him some of the hot parts.

I learned a lot of funny chord voicings from listening to Alex Lifeson. I play in a power trio and I think Rush is an important part of the rock trio literature-- the missing link between Cream and the Police. And I'm willing to put up with the vocals and the lyrics.

I got my son "Tommy" for his birthday and have really enjoyed listening to it again. He keeps playing it over and over, just like I did when it first came out.

Now he wants to rent the movie. I had to explain to him who Ann-Margret is! :)

32. hell yeah!
I love all these guys...It's so freaking weird how many times music has flipped styles since the mid eighties. Some of the bands that are coming out now are kind of having that look, the short haired kind of eurotrash look. I'd like to see those bands get credit for what they did because metal kind of steamrolled over them in the late eighties, early nineties before grunge.

Has anyone ever heard of him? He had a big hit in 1937 with "I Can't Get Started", but he was primarily a trumpet player, and in my considered opinion the best white trumpet player of the Swing Era, and that includes Bix...just some remarkable stuff...
