Office cubicle size - what is a normal sized cube?
in the petty office politics I have been given the runt cube that has absolutely no room to move in.. and hell I can't even have another chair in the cube in case someone comes over to talk to me...that is how narrow and small it is.

Now I don't care about having a cube...but I think that having a cube that makes working there claustrophobic is wrong...

did i mention that they failed to wire it with electricity??? so not sure how they expect me to work in it...

1. No electricity?
Does your job involve working with a computer? Most of the computers I'm familiar with use it, unless they got you one of those new-fangled steam-driven ones.

The cubes in my office are mostly pretty small (I think mine is 6'X8', more or less), but I do have room, just barely, for a guest chair, and they were kind enough to let me have electricity.

So yes, your situation seems like a scene right out of "Dilbert." Catbert would be proud. Do you have a Pointy-Haired Boss to complain to?

2. well see that is the problem...they didn't give me the new steam
driven computer...so I have been working from home all week because I was so "steamed" at the situation they put me in.

My boss is cool, but he wasn't involved in the move as he is in a different location and he is now trying to figure out what to do.

The cube I was given is so small that a bunch of boxes they had piled up in my cube made it impossible for me to sit down until the boxes were unloaded...

I asked to see my new office before we moved...but I was denied permission because I was not "special"...only the "special" people were allowed to see the office.

3. Hi bleedingheart
:hi:

If there isn't room for another chair, then that is a really small cube. Maybe it is just a temporary move?

I had a guy in the cube next to me who actually brought a tape measure over to measure my space to make sure he wasn't being gipped!! I was working for a huge aerospace company and they allocated cube space depending on your job title. I laughed so hard at that tape measure.

As far as what to do, if you can't work at work, then see if you can telecommute until a suitable workspace is made for you.

8. you know what is funny...
my coworker and I bring in almost a million in revenue per year that helps pay for the other people's salaries...we are the only ones who do what we do in the company and it isn't a pleasant job (loads of customer interaction)...and we are the only two who got shit up on with the two smallest cubes.

One of the sales guys begged me not to quit over it...(not that i was thinking about it...but it goes to show you that at least one person thought it was stupid)...

4. "Bleedingheart, we're gonna go ahead and move you to storage room B"
Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 08:53 AM by Richardo

So I'm gonna have to ask you to go ahead and move your stuff right after lunch, 'kay? That'd be greaaat."

:)

No electricity? That's below par. To answer your question, our standard cubes are about 10' x 15'. Mine's next to a window! :bounce:

5. Mine is 10 x 10. Comparably "hugh" ;-)
I designed the cube spaces in our office. My supervisor, who has one of the biggest offices in our building, came in and cut one cube in half the day the installers were here. No-one is working in there, but I allowed it to happen and didn't make a fuss, because I can't wait to see her when she tries to squeeze someone in there. We don't even have a desk that will fit in such a small space! She's an idiot. I like letting idiot's plans backfire on them. I'm sorry about your cube.

6. Wow - I feel your pain.
We just had an office remodel - and after a year of being forced to sit in a CORNER (not even a real workspace) tightly wedged between the boss that has it out for me (to my back) and the woman I had to train (whom I adore) I was expecting something better. I used to have an excellent workspace - but when the most annoying and unbearable person in my office announced she was pregnant (she hired on, waited a few months for insurance to kick in, and viola!) I had to give MY workspace to HER and sit in the corner to train the new person hired to take care of the annoying bitch's maternity leave.

Anyway - after she came back from leave she still got my original workspace and I stayed in the corner. The only thing that kept me together was the promise of new and improved conditions after a remodel and the new hire I instantly clicked with sitting 1.5 feet to my right.

We just moved back to our department on Tuesday. My cubicle is really no larger of a workspace than the corner I was stuck in previously. Even better? The boss that has it in for me? Well he decided the perfect place for ME was right next to him where he can stare at the back of my head and my monitor all day. Better than that?? Everyone else had a dividing half-wall between them and the cube next to them. Except for me. There is no barrier between me and this boss whatsoever. Other than a peninsula of his very large U-shaped desk. So, when he turns and works on paperwork at this peninsula he is squarely 2 feet from my back.

It's horrible. I almost cried when I saw it.

10. mmmm
back to your office at home? How absurd is it that they gave you one with no electricity?

yeah, I don't understand the cube thing. My husband has one. I'm glad I have a job where I have to have my own office for privacy reasons!
