KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany - In a World Cup increasingly influenced by referees, a questionable penalty sent Italy into the quarterfinals over surprisingly stout Australia.

The Aussies played even with the favored Italians, carrying a scoreless tie into the third minute of added time before a penalty kick gave Italy a 1-0 victory Monday.

With 12 seconds left, Lucas Neill was called for fouling Fabio Grosso — a judgment that first had the Socceroos howling in protest, then shaking their heads in bitter defeat.

1. Now I do not really follow soccer much
but it seems to me, during all of these World Cup games, the officials are handing out an awful lot of yellow and red cards.

14. It was the correct call
Neill illegally prevented what would most likely have been a goal. He lifted his back up to prevent Grosso, who'd already burned him, from passing. That was a play on the legs, not on the ball, and penalty in the box. The call was correct, and the shot deserved.

5. Oh how horrible
the Aussie had his back turned and the Italian just fell down over top of him.

Man that is just HORRIBLE.

6. indefensible, in my mind
to give away a game on that call. he should be retroactively awarded a yellow card for taking a dive.

8. Just let it go
5 seconds left and the ref decides the game. The #1 rule in officiating in any sport at any level is DON'T DECIDE THE GAME.

10. right, of course
if it had been a penalty, an obvious one, that would be fine (and I support the Azzuri) but let the game go to OT, give the Socceroos an even chance to match.

11. It's a clear penalty: right call, right result
I'm even more convinced now watching the YouTube replay posted above. Neill clearly moves into Grosso's way and, once missing the ball, raises his torso to obstruct Grosso, who had just burned him and was heading towards goal. That's a penalty in any stadium, any time.
