So...I know the nun who was arrested
for stealing $300,000. She was my parents' premarriage therapist. I've met her. She seemed nice. Holy crap.

2. Well actually
that's my mom and stepdad, so...so far, so good.

Dear god, my mom tried to drag me to her for counseling when I was a teenager. Thank God I didn't have money issues!

I can't wait to talk to my mom about this. It's as if God could tell I was having a bad day.

5. I think that's part of it

but the article also says she spent money on cash advances, gifts, and airfare.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/06/29/nun.arrested.ap/index.html

I'm trying not to find amusement in other people's pain, but she was soooo holier-than-thou. Oh, and she loves all things Dobson. So my compassion is a little lacking.

Oh, and she's being represented by Nebraska's slimiest cretin-lawyer. :puke:

16. Holier-than-thou is usual for the Lincoln diocese
They have a real regressive Bishop down there who really is turning back the clock more than most dioceses.

18. She's from Omaha
she stole the money from the Omaha diocese, and that's where she worked.

I'm not Catholic but many of my friends are...and based on their stories I always thought the Omaha diocese was worse than Lincoln's.

6. Hey, sometimes nice people really want $300,000
It's not like she got the money by beating kids up for their milk-money.

13. The church has looked the other way on bigger crimes.

Besides, don't you remember what Paul said in 1st Corinthians 6: 7 "The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?"

14. I think they handled the priest cases
in a horrifying and inexcusably lax manner.

But just because I disagree with that, it doesn't mean that I think other people within the Catholic church should be sheltered from the law or from punishment which fits the crime.

15. Fair enough, but it speaks really poorly of their priorities when they...
let that kind of shit go and then crucify a nun just for taking some money

17. I think we already knew
their priorities were fucked up.

But I don't think they should give her a slap on the wrist just to show they treat everyone the same.

7. Couldn't the diocese have just transferred her to a job where...
she wouldn't be presented with the opportunity to steal money?

9. Why would they transfer her??
It's ILLEGAL.

Seems to me she should be punished for it. I don't know of any other job (except maybe politics) where you get to keep your job after you commit a felony.

Though they could have suspended her pending the outcome of litigation, I suppose.

and the pedophile priests who were given more lenient treatment and sometimes moved to jobs where they wouldn't be in contact with kids.
