Does anyone use PeoplePC as an internet Service Provider? I'm thinking |
|
about switching from AOL, which I have hated for the two years that I've had it. I only use AOL for the connection; I hate their ads, their news, their chat rooms and everything AOL. If anyone has used peoplepc, I'd like to know what you thought about it. The price is about half what I currently pay for AOL, and I never use AOL.
Other questions: What is an accelerator for dial-up connections?
How can I copy my bookmarks and address book when I switch, or is it automatically done?
Do I have to update all of my daily e-mail subscriptions?
Will I have to rejoin DU? (I don't think this is the case, because I can logon at the library with my username)
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

2. Is Cable or DSL out of the question for you??? |
|
What is an accelerator for dial-up connections? - Nothing. Your connection (56K) doesn't get any faster. The pages are compressed so they appear to run faster, but your downloads will not improve one iota. But, as anyone who's ever been on dial-up can attest to, you will probably never get the full 56K- something more like 38-42K depending on line quality.
How can I copy my bookmarks and address book when I switch, or is it automatically done? Your bookmarks, if you use Explorer or Firefox will not be affected one bit. Your address book on the other hand, assuming they're all saved within the AOL program and not downloaded using Thunderbird or Outlook, will have to be copied manually, unless AOL has a process for exporting contacts into either of those e-mail applications, which they may have.
Do I have to update all of my daily e-mail subscriptions? Yes, you will.
Will I have to rejoin DU? No, your AOL login and DU have nothing to do with each other.
As far as the e-mail goes, which I'm sure is your biggest concern, I would recommending using a web-based e-mail service, and then downloading them using an e-mail application. I personally use GMail, and absolutely love it. Send me your e-mail address and I'd be happy to give you an invite. Far too many advantages to gmail to list here, but I assure you it's superior in just about every way.

6. Wow! Thanks so much for your time and your excellent info! I just |

logged back on. In the meantime, I checked out some of the FAQ's on the Peoplepc site, and all of the questions are as you stated above. I really appreciate it.

I've never used it, but my aunt and cousin both did and neither liked it. They both switched. I still have dial-up and use netzero - which seems okay.

4. I used to use them and never had any problems |
|
I switched to cable though when I moved. I signed up with peoplepc on one of their deals. Only 4.97 a month. It always worked and they had lots of local phone numbers.

I can't tell you too much about it because I only use it as a backup when AOL gives me problems. Eventually, I will totally switch to it. I have no complaints, but it is a lot alower than AOL.
