4. The French could have won.
But the Italians did, deservedly so. Very exciting match. Like every situation in life there's always at least one selfish cur like Zadane who debases the dialog. I'm sorry that the other French players had to have such a low-life captain. Bored by soccer? Turn the channel...

I think he is a short timer, he is retiring from soccer and I guess wanted to win today. I am very shocked.

13. spousette and I wondered about the topical meds and pain killers he took
his shoulder was REALLY loused up and those meds may have affected him. Even for a hard fighter like Zidane, that was uncharacteristic for him.

And this is the most exciting sport in the world, by the way. you could see the emotion boiling on the field.

I pity those who have not seen a Van Gogh or heard Carmen live. I feel sorry for those who have not seen the Alps, or the Grand Ditch. I pity those who are too close-minded or inexperienced to understand just why this game is so exciting.

54. I agree. Soccer is exciting till the last minute
I've never been the greatest soccer fan in the planet. As a matter of fact, I've often been more inclined towards the arts than to sports... but soccer is one sport that always keeps you at the edge of your seat until the end. I find it silly that those "soccer-bashers" always complain about the low number of scores per game. Sad.

Soccer is not about "scoring points", but about the skill, the joy of game, the tension, and the "delayed satisfaction." Just like SEX.

(Unless, of course, you are more into quick scoring and premature satisfaction).

:hi:

49. Sorry, but Zidane has a history of losing his cool often
Edited on Sun Jul-09-06 05:36 PM by Julius Civitatus
He always been very professional except for that part: sometimes he has outbursts like that. He almost got disqualified in the 98 World Cup for attacking a player from Saudi Arabia, and I've seen him lose his cool more than once while playing for the Real Madrid. Sorry to say, but Zidane is like that.

It's awful to see such a great player end his career in such an awful and embarrassing fashion. He knows better.

I am pretty sure they could have won.

Darn it. My mom is French and she was really, really, really pissed. Actually, my father's side of the family is German. What a disappointment.

And, I have to agree with Trumad: Most of the soccer games are just not as exciting as football. But there are more boring games on this planet than soccer.

62. NASCAR is lots better than soccer
In soccer you have ten guys on one side and ten guys on the other. (And the two goaltenders; since they have to stay in the goals, they don't count here.)

The ten guys on one team run down the field as hard as they can kicking the ball toward the goal so the goaltender can catch it and throw it back while the other ten guys try to stop them from doing it. When it gets thrown back, the other team runs the ball back up the field so the goaltender up there can catch it and throw it back. This goes on for a couple of hours, and then they have a shootout to decide who won the game.

And then, right AFTER the game, there's a big riot where thirty or forty people get killed, and they have to call in the army to break it up.

Not only that, but you people can't even agree on what the game is called!

NASCAR is more fun because it's a different game every weekend. Let me pick out three tracks for you: Talladega, Martinsville, Watkins Glen. The crew chief wins Talladega, not the driver, because you drive Talladega by nailing the gas and avoiding multicar pileups. Setup is absolutely everything. Martinsville is all about brake management because it's a little track that you run by braking very hard twice a lap. And Watkins Glen is a road course...which you need a special car for, since the pit stalls are on the right side of the car, not the left like they are at every other track on the circuit.

You guys want a seriously boring sport? Tennis.

No sport is more popular or democratic.
Nor is any sport played by more of its own spectators. In the US, the stands are full of people who've never played football at any level, in their entire lives - just as one example.

26. Yep. It doesn't take affluence to play.
It also doesn't take a pituitary anomaly or sideshow freak. People can play at all ages and levels. It emphasizes endurance, coordination, agility, fitness, and team coordination. It's not a sport that's merely an excuse for showing commercials, either.

Like I say: democratic.

Most Americans just DON'T.GET.IT. Having been a diehard NFL fan attending NFL "church" at Steve Tannen's home on Sundays, it took me some years to understand the reality of Fußball. I DO GET why Amis DON'T.GET.IT.

Fußball is about the fluidity of the play. It's about skill, luck and whatever the moment brings. And you're correct, a VERY DEMOCRATIC mindset is also a requirement. ;-) :loveya:

Goals are all that matters, right? Things like the fluid beauty of a well-coordinated attack, the tension of a hard-fought contest at goal, the combination of grace, athleticism, touch and almost supernatural awareness of where their teammates are that the best soccer players have, is all as nothing next to the fact that they just don't score enough...and you probably think they need more commercial breaks, too. :eyes:

I find American football beyond boring, but also a "show-off" sport that's not very democratic. What I mean by that is that you need to be the size of a fridge to play that sport, and then wear the armor on top. Soccer is not about "size." "Size really doesn't matter" in soccer: it's about SKILL, and SMARTS.

I find tennis exciting if it is a good game (say the Wimbledon finals), same for basketball, although regular basket games tend to be tedious. Watching golf should be qualified as "torture" by Amnesty International.

61. Americans don't like sporting events that feature non-stop action.
Edited on Sun Jul-09-06 06:54 PM by stopbush
They like football because a play runs for 4 seconds...and then there's a break to get another beer or take a dump.
They call American football "football" even though the foot is used only for punts, kick offs and field goals while calling
the world's version of football "soccer." Go figure.

People say the WC is boring...and watch stop-n-start sports and call them exciting.

They like basketball where there's little action but lots of scoring...and tons of hot dogging.

Americans in general also dislike hockey which doesn't allow time for commericials...and taking a dump.

Americans like NASCAR because everybody drives and they can relate to constantly turning left.

The World Cup was great this year. This was my favorite month for sports in years, what with
the WC, Wimbledon, Le Tour and ML baseball all running concurrently. It was almost impossible to keep up with it all!

Americans are actually more passionate about the stop-n-start of their TV sports than the sports themselves. How else
to explain the mania that accompanies watching the commercials during the Super Bowl?
