My kitty needs good karma :-(
My tiny gray and white, 15 year old kitty Peewee is in very bad shape. He's had hyperthyroid disease for over a year, and now his heart appears to be giving way. He's had five chest taps in the past two months, and twice he collapsed several hours afterwards. Both his regular vet and a specialist missed the early signs of the heart disease (I guess it's easy to sometimes), and now his lungs are filling with fluid. The prognosis is guarded to poor. I just can't stop crying; I've had Wee since college; the kitten of a friend's Turkish Angora who had mated with an alley cat. She gave birth to five kittens, and PeeWee was the runt; I fed him with an eyedropper when his mother refused him and we've been inseparable ever since.
He's the most intelligent, loyal and loving cat I've ever had. I've had many pet's over the years, but my late collie and PeeWee have been the most unforgettable. Whenever I come home, he's standing by the door waiting for me. He cuddles with me every night before I go to sleep. He curls up on my lap when I work. The house is so empty without him tonight-it's so hard to imagine that it will always be this way. Please send your prayers, good karma, or whatever you believe in his way. I'm still hoping for a miracle. ;(

6. Thanks so much
I know that many DUers truly do understand. There are so many kind and compassionate souls here who love, or have loved, a "fur kid."
Every moment with him has been a gift. I feel so greedy to ask him for more at this stage, but I can't help it.

I put my Pawl Newman down last month. Very hard. I had her since the day she was born and she was over 19 yrs. old. It still hurts, but, it beats watching her daily pain and loss of dignity. She was TOO dignified to lose control.

Best wishes to you both.

14. Sending lots of good karma to PeeWee tonight
I hope that he responds to treatment and stabilizes. He's lucky to have such a caring owner. One of my fur babies died last month, very unexpectedly. She was 11 and had a stroke - we think she had cardiomyopathy (heart disease) and she went quickly. I know how you feel. It is so gut wrenching to lose our babies, our kittykids. My heartfelt prayers go out to you.

I know what Jen is going through as I've got a 17 year old Border Collie myself who has his up and down days. Latest challenge has been finding something he's interested in eating. He's lost 25% of his body weight recently. He got scrambled eggs this morning.

My sweet Kitka had the same thing, and she was only 13(she had breast cancer too).. I wish I could tell you that it gets better..:(

Just take comfort in knowing that you saved his life and gave him a great one at that.. It's a cruel trick, that we love them so much, and they don't live long lives, by our standards..

but, ho knows...miracles can happen.. Fingers crossed here for just such a miracle for you and Wee..

23. Sending many good thoughts to you and Peewee...
The cross-species bond is a very strong one -- you and Peewee have enjoyed many sweet times together. All things willing, you'll share some more.

If somehow Peewee should decide that he wants to rest, you will carry him in your heart for the rest of your life, and he will always be just a thought away. Nothing will ever truly separate you from him -- and that's forever.

All best to you and Peewee --

27. Homeopathy can sometimes work miracles with animals
We had a dog that survived 15 months with lung cancer. X-rays showed the tumors shrinking after 3 months of treatment. The poor thing died from liver damage due to seizure medication.
The dosing is easy: dissolve the remedy in distilled water, draw up in a needle-less syringe and squirt on the animal's tongue. That's it.
Check this site for a veterinary homeopath in your area:

Best of luck

43. four cats and two people here....
...rooting for this tough little guy.

My 16-year-old tabby Chester has hyperthyroidism and I've been fighting for his life for a couple of months now. I'll be facing that difficult decision if he doesn't get stronger soon.

I learned through working in a human ICU-CCU for five years that there are worse things than dying. Being kept alive when suffering is a miserable existence. It just hurts so much for us to let go, though.

Some people make gardens to commemorate a beloved pet, and that seems like a comforting thing.

Here's a link for the Virtual Pet Cemetery web site, where you can post a photo and memorial. http://www.mycemetery.com/pet/index.html

And here's a site with lots of links to other grief management sites. Did you know that on Monday nights all over the world people light candles for their beloved companions?

http://www.petloss.com/

Well, my heart is breaking for your sad time. Just know that you are not alone.

51. Hoping for the best
but whatever happens, remember this: you've given him a happy, healthy, long life already. Your memories will be with you forever, and while that doesn't heal the Pee-Wee sized hole that will be left in your heart, it does get easier with time. I hope his time is not yet, but having faced that myself too many times with too many beloved pets, I can tell you the kindest thing is to let go when he tells you it's time. And he will tell you, if you listen. You'll know.

My three send healing purrs Pee-Wee's way and yours.

60. Am I doing the right thing?
As I said earlier, when I gave PeeWee a pill tonight he wwent into a seizure. It wasen't the pill that did it, it was the stress of me giving him the pill. I was supposed to give him another around 1am, and force some pedialyte into him-but I'm afraid another seizure will do him in. The last one was horrible-he thrashed around on the tile floor of the bathroom until I moved him to the carpeted bedroom. i thought he had died, but he came back slowly. I was beside myself and he was terrified. He still hasn't eaten tonight, and can barly take fluids. My Grandmother died of similar symptoms last year. My mom was with her then, and said that although she struggled to breath, she still wanted reease from her frail body. Should I release PeeWee? Should I allow his body to shut down? This is killing me, and I have no one to stay with me tonight.

61. It's a tough decision, Jen
We never want to let our kittychild go, but I've had to make the painful decision to do so, convincing myself that the greatest love I could show my baby was to let him go. However, this is your decision, and you must do what you feel is right. If you feel the stress of giving PeeWee the pill is the cause of the seizure, then it seems that would do more harm than any benefit he could get from the pill - just my opinion. Whatever your decision, I know what you're going through, and my thoughts are with you and PeeWee. Hugs!

I've been following this thread since yesterday when you posted it. I feel sooo bad for you and PeeWee. I haven't known what to say, but I prayed for PeeWee last night, and have thought about you and the kitty several times today.

I'm by no means any kind of an expert, I've just loved animals all my life. I know how hard the situation is that you and PeeWee are in right now.

It breaks my heart to ask you this, but was your vet hopeful, or did he/she suggest that you think about doing anything like what you're asking about now?

If not, I think you should be on the phone to him/her first thing in the morning, if not sooner, and tell him how PeeWee is tonight, and ask him what you're asking here. And if its possible to do without further stress for PeeWee, get a second opinion.

72. It's good advice, (not so) nu duer
He made it through the night, but he's still so weak, and unable to eat. I'm going to call the vet soon and tell him about this, and the seizure last night-and see if he realistically foresees any kind of real recovery. I know there are some vets in the area who will come to the house to release him from his body. I've never put an animal down before, so if it comes to that, it will be the toughest thing I've ever done.

76. Jen.. It's not as awful as you imagine

Whe our motherdog, Tasha started to fail, I was worried sick that I would not be "able" to help her.. In the end she could not stand, and refused food and water..She sent me the signal that she was needing my help.. I saved her from the pound, I helped her deliver her babies, and now she needed me again.. I could not lift her (85 lbs) , so my sweet son Steven, picked her up and held her on his lap all the way to the vet.. She had always dreaded going to the vet, but that day she was very calm.. The vet took us to one of the back rooms, and we held her in our lap.. When we had said our good byes and were ready, she gave Tasha the injection.. She never even flinched, just let out a breath and that was all.

The vet let us leave via the back entrance and mailed me a condolence card a week before she sent me the bill..

Less than a month later, her daughter (11 yrs) succumbed to her cancer.. We helped her too..:(

It's not easy, but when their quality of life is gone, they are too.. We want them to stay...but it's for US, not them :(

I had always dreaded the actual event, but afterwards we actually felt okay about it.. It hurt like hell to have them "not here" but we knew they were suffering, so we had to help them.. It's just sad that we cannot do the same for humans :(

78. Thanks for sharing those experiences SoCalDem
I already have calls into vets who will come to the house to do it, if need be. I still am hanging on to every last bit of hope. But I will try my best to see when (and if ) it comes to the point where I'm keeping him here far more for me than for him, and do the right thing.

How incredibly sad...we're pulling for you Peewee! I'm going home to Kentucky this weekend and bringing my two cool cats Riley and Malley back with me to Miss'ippi because I just can't stand being without them! I never used to be a cat person but they can just absolutely get right down into your soul. All the best to your kitty!

64. Awww Jen and PeeWee
I have had so many dogs and they have all died of old, old age. It is so hard when they get to the point where you are right now. My dogs, cats and horses and especially me send our thoughts and love. I hope this night goes smoothly but the time will come no matter what so just love the little one and do the best you can. I really will think of you.

66. Jen6, ... giving fluids to a cat ...
Jen, for the times one of my cats was sick and not drinking water, the vet injected fluids. I'm not sure if it was a shot or an IV as they took the little guy into another room, but this is the procedure when they are not getting fluids.

I saw you post above about giving pedialyte and thought I would mention this. I wasn't sure if your vet had done this.

I am thinking about you and little Wee and have much hope that he can pull through this. Wishing both of you, all the best of everything.

67. if the cat is fairly docile....
giving fluids yourself is rather easy. I've had to do it lots of times for an old diabetic cat of mine. The vet showed me how and sent me home with the proper equipment. Luckily, Polly's a pretty mellow girl. It doesn't hurt them, but they DO have to be restrained for a few minutes.

good luck!

68. He's very docile
But when I gave him a pill tonight, he collapsed in a violent seizure-legs flailing, head knocking against the tile floor of my bathroom-then he went still and stiff-but came back after several minutes of my petting him and weeping for him (and cursing myself for causing him the stress that caused the seizure).
I've managed to get a small syringe worth of pedialyte into him tonight, and he's taking a few small sips of water on his own. He falls down after only a few minutes of standing, and sends out weak, small mews for my help...I don't know what I'll find in the morning. I know that if it's his time, I must accept it and realize that his tiny, frail body needs to rest. I can't bear the idea of him suffering as he has tonight for much longer. Please send out two prayers to the universe; that he either finds himself recovering miraculously, or passes away peacefully in his sleep soon.

Thank you all so much...I haven't the words. My close friends are all out of town this weekend-I'm alone in this. I don't think I could bear it without my DU family.

70. Jen, good kitties ALWAYS get good karma
kitties are Gods way of telling us we deserve to be human.

Sometimes we lose. They gain, however, by being with Bast and exerting influence in the human world. Kitties love us because we love them. It's pretty equal, sometimes. Until he/she catches a dragonfly and the "batteries" quit.....then it's YOUR problem.

You have prayers, flowing karma, and the very best strength and hope from my 5 kitties, Cinnamon, Sugar, Sassafras, Callie and Bouncer.

Peewee is in the best of hands - yours.

74. Update
Peewee went back to spend the day at the vets this morning. His doctor doesn't want to give up just yet. He looks so bad, and I know it's hard on him going there, but this vet is well respected, so I have to trust his judgement and pray that he's right-that there still is some hope. I'm bringing him home at 7pm, and I'll update again a little later. Thank you all so much for all the kind wishes for us both. DUers are the most generous souls on earth.

77. Update 2
Peewee is home again. The vet says he's still "touch and go" and "in guarded condition," and he promised to tell me when he loses hope-but he says that time isn't here yet.

Wee is sleeping soundly now. It's hard not to stroke him and kiss his head, but as he hasn't had sound sleep in many days, so I'm doing my best to allow him to get the sleep he needs. He still hasn't eaten, but the vet gave me a feline equivalent of ensure to give him as I can. I picked up an anti-anxeity medication for myself, so that I can be a better kittymommie now. It helps, and so do all the healing thoughts of wonderful DUers.

80. I'm so glad your vet still has hope
I think that means a lot. Exactly one year ago next week we had to put our dear cat Magnus to sleep (he had untreatable cancer and his lungs kept filling with fluid, stopped eating, lost tons of weight and we knew it was time when he no longer sought out or responded at all to affection). It was very very hard to make the decision to end his life and we cried for days leading up to and afterwards. But we both felt a sense of relief--that we had released him from something--and we don't regret our decision (though we maybe should have done it sooner).

I'm really thinking about you and PeeWee. My other cat, Barney, a great blue point Siamese who is 12 and who I only rescued a year ago (our other cat was very distressed alone and we got a second one to keep her company, but he won us over) has a sarcoma tumor on his neck. He had it in February and we broke the bank to have it removed and now it has returned. We took him to the vet today and they suggested doing tests tomorrow and possibly a second surgery.

Right now I feel like I'll never want to have another pet again, going through this is just too hard. I am trying to be in denial about the whole thing, but my husband is a doctor and he thinks this is the beginning of the end. I wish I were religious and believed in miracles for both of our cats!

81. other thoughts
I've been trying to keep my Chester nourished over the last couple of months when he couldn't keep anything down and had no appetite, and I have tried every suggestion I could find. Each cat is different. Things you could try include soft-cooked egg yolk, home-made chicken broth, canned sardines (lots of cats will eat them when they have lost their appetite). I made home-made chicken broth with a little parsley in it, and could feed it with an eyedropper or syringe. Just remember that onions in all forms are harmful to cats.

Regarding the pill. You might ask the vet if the same medicine could be given in "trans-dermal" form. Which means it is made into a cream and rubbed on the skin of the ear, inside. The medicine enters the body through the skin. You would need to have a "compounding" pharmacy make it that way, and there usually is at least one in most towns. But if the trauma of pill-taking is causing so much distress, it might be worth getting. Also, I found that eye-dropping a little water into Chester's mouth BEFORE I pop the pill in helps it go down easier. And of course you could try putting it in butter.

If he gets a little better, you might ask the doctor about giving him Pepcid to calm his stomach so he can eat. Many veterinarians recommend Pepcid AC for feeding problems. Chester gets 1/4 tab daily.

86. Good suggestions
I used low sodium chicken broth and a product called "Clinic care" for cats made by the makers of Ensure, plus I'm giving him pedialyte for extra hydration. I tried chicken babyfood, as per SoCalDem's suggestion, but his appetite still isn't big enough. I'll try the egg yolk and sardines too. He also loves the chicken in those Wendy's chicken salads, so I'll stop by there on my way to pick him up from the vet tonight (he's there for his daily fluids therapy). I'll also ask the vet about pepcid AC. How old is Chester, by the way?

Just as a note to others DUers with fur kids in their lives currently; I can't recommend putting your pets on a veternary insurance policy strongly enough. For $11 a month, I've already saved over $2000 on Peewee's care this year. It would be horrible to have the one thing standing between your pet and his or her health be the simple issue of money.

Peewee slept well and soundly through the night for the first time in over a week. He only mewed for me when he wet his bed linens (I'd find him sitting outside his carried, looking a little ashamed). as soon as the carrier was cleaned out and a fresh towel placed inside, he would crawl back in and promply fall back to sleep. The previuos night he had wandered throughout the house, mewing weakly, useing the litter box and trying to drink and eat, but never feeling comfortable enough to stay in one place for more than ten minutes. I hope last night's sound sleep was a good sign, and not the other way around.

89. glad to hear PeeWee is resting!
You asked how old my Chester is -- he's 16.

He's been doing so much better with the Pepcid. I also found a commercial pet food that he loves, after trying dozens with no luck. It's made by Petguard and available at health food stores. All natural stuff. He gobbles the beef-wheat germ flavor. It's also available at the web site http://www.petguard.com.

And I wonder if you know the trick of "jumpstarting" them to eat. You take a bit of the food on your finger and transfer it to their nose-mouth area. They have to lick it off, and sometimes will decide it tastes good and eat more.

Are you wrapping him in a towel when you have to pill him? Just swaddle him up like a baby to keep all those legs under control.
