Pirates of the Caribbean - Stella's verdict |
|
LOVED IT.
To summarize:
Johnny Depp was hilarious.
Orlando Bloom is the new Errol Flynn.
Keira Knightly wasn't annoyingly beautiful and spoiling the film - in fact, she only has heaving bosoms for the first ten minutes, after which she is in trousers and a tricorn hat, swordfighting! It rocked!
Excellent, top-notch, brilliantly choreographed, almost slapstick fighting and action scenes, and the special effects were very, very good - if gross.
LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT. Liked it better than the first.

1. It was 5 and a half hours of non-stop action! |
|
Or at least it felt like it.
Shheeeeesh. Make a good movie and THEN design a theme park; don't design a theme park and then try to make a movie around it.
Didn't much like this one.

Keira Knightly was both less feminine and more erotic in this one. Nice mixture. Bloom is finally learning to act, and I swear his cheekbones got higher. Norrington's character was the complete opposite of the last film, and yet somehow that worked.
Only complaint--a bit long on the bits between the story. In the first one, the story sort of flowed through the action scenes, and the scenes themselves were more part of the story, creating a dramatic tension. In this one several of the scenes were choreography showstoppers, kind of like the old musicals when everything halted so someone could sing about how they felt. The best musicals are the ones where the songs don't stop the action, but move it along. Watch how Disney used them in Hercules and Mulan. I felt that the three-way sword fight was good dancing, and nice slapstick, but it still slowed the story down. That happened a couple of times.
Small complaint, though. I didn't expect Hemmingway, so I wasn't disappointed by his absence. Good, fun flick. I loved Naomie Harris's character, for some reason. Well, the reason should be obvious... Wow.

5. It was fun but it seemed like it was made for kids |
|
To be fair, I had trouble being engaged in the storyline because I didn't pay all that much attention to the first one. The action was great, but the last fight scene was a bit too ridiculous. The music, although not really much different from the first one, is incredible. As in the first one, the acting was great and Johnny Depp plays a great pirate. It was definitely a fun movie.
