"As the World Turns" Actor Kills Himself
Newsday, Melville, N.Y.
Benjamin Hendrickson, an Emmy Award-winning soap opera actor who played the detective Hal Munson on As the World Turns for 21 years, shot himself in his Huntington home on Sunday.
Hendrickson temporarily left the show to take care of his mother in 2002 and became depressed after she died, family members said. The 55-year-old Huntington, New York native lived and worked in New York City but spent almost every weekend at his childhood home on Long Island.
"He was a man who could tell a story and grab everyone's attention in a minute," said Stephen Hendrickson of West Sayville, Benjamin's nephew.
Hendrickson, a graduate of Huntington High School and the first class of Juilliard's drama school, held dozens of different roles on Broadway and was a founding member of The Acting Company started by John Houseman.
