Speaking of Tanning: Who else fake 'n bakes?
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 02:19 PM by Taverner
I do - and I freely admit it

Ain't nothing wrong with a little bronzing in a tanning bed

1. yup, bronzer in medium, i try and stay out of the sun as much as possible

2. My sister has one of those airbrush tanner things
But the refills say it's carcinogenic, so I don't see the point. At least the sun is free.

3. I'm so freakin' fair-skinned that the only way I can get any
sort of tan is to get it from a tube. I had one earlier in the summer, and I'm about to do another one. Best self-tanner I've ever used is Lancome Flash Bronzer for Legs (but I use it all over). It lasts a week and is tinted so you can see where you put it---and it's not streaky! :)

4. do you use that on your face as well? I've held back on trying the face
ones for fear of the dreaded "Orange" color.

7. I do indeed. This is the only stuff that doesn't turn me orange!
I use a small amount on my fingertips and go a little lighter than I would on my legs, arms, or elsewhere. I use it about an hour before I go to bed and let it dry as thoroughly as I can. It's got a "flash bronzer" in it that's kind of shimmery, but when you shower the next morning, the shimmery stuff washes off and the tan is still there. :) The key to putting it on your face is to go easy on it. :D

6. Not anymore.
I used to, though, before I realized how bad it is for your skin.

9. I use Jergens natural glow (for medium skin tones)
on my body and Jergens natural glow FACE (designed for fair skin tones) on my face. I've been getting compliments for weeks on my great tan. Not orange at all.

I like it, but I wish it didn't smell slightly like urine.

12. Pale people of the world, unite!
I have a *tiny* bit of color on my shoulders and cheeks, from hanging out outside all Saturday afternoon. But I don't tan well. I don't think a tanning bed would do much either.

13. Self-tanners are the way to go if you really want a tan.
I have a family history of skin cancer and have been sunburned badly a few times, so I stay out of the sun unless I'm wearing sunscreen. I stay away from tanning beds too.

14. Some spray tans work really well
But the thing about tan in a bottle is what may work for one may not work for someone else...trial and error unfortunately

Have I mentioned how stunning redheads look with a tan?

15. Those Things Cause Baldness, Cataracts, Sterility and MALE SHRINKAGE!!
The also contribute to skin carcinoma and inflame external cold sores. I've heard that it sometimes helps acne to heal... but the overall risk of getting Alzheimer's from the negative energy waves of a tanning machine is just too great to make even that small benefit worthwhile.

But... I suppose if smoking cigarettes is legal then tanning machines can be legal too.

18. Yeah yeah yeah
But Lack of sun causes all kinds of problems too...

And the solar fear that the sunscreen companies have hyped up is a lot of BS

19. Trouble with tanning beds as opposed to the sun is 20x UVA exposure
UVA is the type of ultraviolet light responsible for skin aging, and dangerous forms of skin cancer.

20. I had heard that with beds you get much less UVA than the sun
And that you need special beds to get you the UVA's (for longer lasting tans)

23. Ah you're right--the all-UVA were the older machines
But looking up stuff to make sure I knew what I thought I knew I found this:

Laboratory studies with experimental animals allows the carcinogenic exposure patterns to be precisely examined. A variety of experimental animals readily develop SCC following ultraviolet light exposure, and much of our knowledge of skin cancer has been obtained from them. When UV light is given in many small doses designed to simulate what indoor tanners might receive, experimental animals actually developed more SCCs than when the same amount of energy was delivered in a few big doses resulting in sunburns.
Similarly, wrinkling, an important element of photoaging, is greater in the hairless albino mouse when a given dose of UV is delivered in smaller daily fractions, as in a tanning salon. Thus for the development of squamous cell carcinoma and photoaging, tanning is actually more dangerous than burning.
