I am not getting a dog
My Ex had his dog here for a couple of weeks before he moved back out. I miss the dog more than my ex. After my ex moved out I started babysitting a mutt dog of my cousin's and it's been really helpful to have a dog to help with the loneliness.

Then TODAY!!! My parents had a great-grandbaby over for a visit with his parents and one of my Mom's dogs mauled and really hurt the three-year-old. They are in the emergency room as we speak. Screw that, I would rather be lonely than have an unpredictable dog that attacks children. My Mom has had this dog for 5 years and it never nipped or bit anyone.

3. Cats are nice.
They can be standoffish, but a purring cat on the lap is very pleasant thing.

Plus, they don't do much more than scratch. Hope the kid is okay.

4. It was just ironic
I was all gung-ho on getting a dog until this happened. I will stick with my three cats, they may not fetch, but at least I know we are all safe and happy. :-)

5. Roon, just a minute here. Cats have been known to bite, and savagely.
My husband was bitten on the thumb by a cat that was rubbing his body against my husband's leg at the dinner table.

Hubby reached down to pet the cat, and that's when he bit the thumb.

Had to go to the hospital, get information on tetanus shot (updated) and cat scratch fever.

The owner of that cat had him euthanized. It turned out that the cat was teased repeatedly by former tenants of the apartment owner. He had bitten before, therefore, the owner made the decision.

I don't have any animals anymore, more because we travel 3 - 4 months out of the year and I just couldn't bear putting an animal into a boarding situation for that length of time. It just wouldn't be fair.

Hope the child is OK. All animals are unpredictable; some are more unpredictable than others, it seems.

8. I knew someone that had a cat
that would roll on her back and beg people to scratch it's belly. When they started to pet her, she would go nuts and attack! Cats are crazy all around...none of my cats do that, thank god!!

6. I'm sorry...
I hope the kid's ok. It's so sad when that kind of thing happens.

When I was a baby we had a dog--nicest dog in the world, very loving, protective, etc--but I startled him when he was sleeping and he, understandably, freaked and mauled me so we had to get rid of him. It's sad, but I just don't think little tiny kids and pets are the best idea, generally speaking.

And I empathize about wanting a dog, too. I miss my family doggie, (a different one, not the maul-y one), and I want one of my own terribly but 1. I couldn't afford to take care of him properly right now, and 2. I wouldn't be home often enough to hang out with him so I'll just have to wait a while longer.

 for all your troubles.

7. That is absolutely no reason to not have a dog.
I don't care much for children, there are too many of them in my opinion.
However, I do enjoy having Moe around.

He is one of six dogs that are currently living with me. I would bet the child did something to provoke the attack. Here is a hint; As a responsible adult human you shouldn't leave children alone with an unfamiliar animal. Now the dog will be "put to sleep" (aka- executed) for being a dog. I feel sorry for the dog.......

14. My wife and I adopted Cody before we were married.
He was our "first child"...he was so smart and such a great dog. Plus, he was a very handsome boy and got comments everyplace we went with him.

We had to quit taking him to the dog park because all he wanted to do was "herd" the other dogs.

He was "my dog"; he followed me everywhere. I really miss him.

Also, there's something more going on with that dog and it's owner.

15. Something is wrong, I love dogs and lived with them my
entire life.
My dogs listened to my baby's heartbeat when I was pregnant,..They'de rest on my tummy.
So, I've had children and dogs together living together, always. The dogs enriched my kids lives,
and my children make the dogs very happy!

17. You can't blame all dogs for one dogs actions
That's not fair.

That's a horrible thing to happen and I understand your reaction but it's certainly not the norm. I don't know what may have happened in this incident but quite often when a child is mauled, it's because they inadvertantly hurt or startle the dog. Sometimes it's a case of a dog being nervous around kids. Sometimes it's just a miserable dog. But whatever the case, kids should never be left unsupervised around any dog (again, I don't know how this happened so this is not a judgment on your particular case just a general observation) and dog owners should make sure their dog is properly socialized to reduce the risk of such things.

I hope the baby will be all right, Roon.
