Opinions: I went into a gay bar in DC...
Now I am not gay...which is more than a disclaimer...it is necessary to relate the story...

I went to a gay bar with my sister (who is gay) to have a beer...

They had what I thought was a good idea....

If you were straight they had buttons you could wear..you know, so you wouldn't get hit on...

I thought it was a great way to make non-gay patrons more comfortable...most straight people aren't used to getting hit on by someone of the same sex, and it can be kinda uncomfortable at first.

Anyone else run into this? Think it's a good idea?

1. I got throw out of a gay bar once
Lesbian bar here in Richmond.

I was coming home from a girlfriend's house early on a Friday. About 10 so I went in to have a beer. One beer, no service after that. Some people were complaining. I was sitting at the bar having a beer.

Anyway. That seems a bit odd to me. Why cut off the lines of communication?

8. Trust me, there are guys who like to "look at the cirrus"
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 09:23 AM by LostinVA
Or "look at the freaks." Most women -- gay or straight -- know how many guys have this mindset... so, it's a comfort-level thing. It's also a safety thing. Why else would a straight guy go alone into a lesbian bar?

You were probably making most of the ladies in there uncomfortable or afraid for one reason or another... if it's the bar I'm thinking it probably is, there have been incidents outside in the past.

4. They need those for straight bars
Every woman I've ever hit on was a lesbian, at least I assume so since I can't imagine any other reason for rejecting me.

7. Ummm...
Unfortunatley; I think many gay ppl would find that slightly insulting.
That's why they have gay bars in the first place,
If you choose to walk in the door; you are choosing to deal with the parameters set out You should expext that they are going to assume you are gay and may be open to being hit on,
Sorry; that's just the risk you take.

11. ok, if you're straight...and aren't comfortable being hit on
by gays...why agree to go to a gay bar

I've been hit on a couple times in gay bars...but it doesn't bother me. I figure it's just what you have to expect.

12. Well like I posted...
I was with my sister who is gay...and this was one of her favorite places to eat...so I went with her. I would have gone whether those buttons were there or not...but they were.

Just thought it was a thoughtful thing to do...
