Men: How Much Did You Pay For Your Last Haircut? Also, Women...
Women... what are you spending each time you go to the hair stylist?

Here in Maryland... just outside of DC... I can get a decent buzzcut for $11 (not including a tip).

-- Allen

P.S. What's a good tip for an $11 haircut? I usually tip $4 to make it an even $15. Is that too much? Or am I insulting my barber?

1. Usually $16, but I have coupons for $2 off.
This is my place of choice: www.sexyscissors.com

I usually pay with a $20 and let the stylist keep the change.

Of course, it doesn't FEEL like US$5 because of our depressed currency.

I give my haircutter $5 because he's fucking awesome, and doesn't do all that shit where they try to tell you what would look good on you.

9. Men's haircut: $7
Long Hair: $12

..so reads the sign at my local barber. There are other places to get your hair cut, but if you live in or near a serious rural area like me, you owe it to yourself to go to the barber.

This guy is great, he's like a million years old and so, so good at what he does. No appointments, you walk in and wait in turn. The men waiting all have muddy work boots on (like, pointy boots, because they do a lot of work on horseback). And you know how some people talk about the weather? These people talk about it in earnest.

Great. It's just great! :)

15. I've never had my hair cut by a stylist
My hair is extremely long, and I trim it myself, but when I take my son to the barber, its $10.00, and I give him a $5.00 tip. He's a great barber, always finds time to fit my kid into his schedule and I believe in tipping well for good service.

18. $15, but I always tip another $5
Back in the early '70's we had a barber in my hometown who would cut any guy's long hair for free-only HE got to decide how short to go.

And my Barber has never been insulted by that.

I find most barbers here are happy just to get business a lot of times. Especially if you are a good customer and not too fussy. (Oh it has to be juuuuuust right; thats what stylists are for. ;-) )

21. I cut my husband's hair.
I've been doing it for 30 years or so. I also did my children's hair. I also do my own most of the time, but occasionally I go to someone and have it cut. The last time, a couple of years ago, it was $15. I gave a $5 tip.

Sometimes my husband offers to cut my hair, but I wouldn't let him anywhere near my hair with scissors. Sometimes he'll decide to do the sides of his own hair and it looks like he was run over with a lawn mower. I beg him not to do it, but he does it sometimes anyway.

35. I pay $50 for STYLING for me and the same for my kid... I used
to send her to get her hair done at Supercuts, but the cuts were consistently SUCKY, so it's back to the fancy schmancy hairdresser for her too.

And that's his friends and family price.

26. Seven Bucks
I go to the local beauty school - seven bucks for a haircut done by a student, and checked by a licensed instructor. Up until a few months ago when they raised their prices, it was only five bucks.

I've been going there since I moved to Pueblo eight years ago, and have never gotten a bad haircut.

29. $34 for both of us, we get it done every 5-6 weeks.
Tip 20% -- the charge depends on whether we get our hair washed or not, it varies a couple of bucks from time to time.

Mr. and Mrs. Nownow both have freak hair -- really thick and curly, and we both wear it relatively long. A bad haircut is a disaster (when your hair is curly, a bad cut looks that much worse), so once I find somebody who does a good job, I stick with them, at least to a point.

I don't think I'd go over $20, though -- the last haircut I paid that much for was awful, and the woman who cut my hair acted like she was doing me a big favor. She talked to another stylist the whole time she was working on me, she didn't even talk to me!

The learning curve on my hair is too steep to pay that much for somebody to cut it three or four times and learn how to do it right. I'd rather teach somebody who's charging me less, though there is a law of diminishing returns on my hair, sadly.

32. 100 bucks
Yup, you heard right. I have hair almost down to my butt and the last time I went and got it cut and permed it cost 100 bucks. It took nearly 3 hours in the chair - including almost an hour and a half just to get it all in curlers. This is why I only get it done once a year.
