Why would w* lie about the Wright Bros. weather conditions?
According to Orville Wright:

"The conditions on the morning of December 17 were perfect for flight - high, consistent winds blowing from the north. At about 10:30 that morning, Orville Wright lay down on the plane's wing surface and brought its engine to life in preparation of launching it and himself into history. His diary tells the story:"

According to w*:

``On the day they did fly, just like today, the conditions were not ideal,'' Bush told a crowd of about 30,000 at the Wright Brothers National Memorial."

Can't this man get any fact straight? He's a pathological liar.

And a complete idiot.

2. it's called confabulation
Whistleass suffers from an alcohol-caused condition called Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome. One of the symtoms is memory loss/confabulation. Since the victim is unable to remember anything, his brain fills in with inventions (confabulations).

It's just like REagan. When he's been out of office a few years, Laura will come forth tearfully to describe how the family is dealing with the disease.

But they won't admit to it now. It makes it too plain that he was selected to be an empty-headed puppet.

The slurring and falling down all the time are other symptoms of alcohol abuse. But the constant lies/made-up stuff are the real tip off.

3. popular
masking the fact that the Wright-plane was only able to take off because of the excellent wind - it'd have needed a catapult otherwise.

5. He reads what is written for him.
Shrub has no clue whatsoever about American history. The most ignorant president in history is also the least intellectually curious. He probably never even heard of the Wright Brothers until this speech was scheduled.

6. Go ahead and hate Bush...
...but hate him for a better reason than this.

BFD- that his weather report wasn't perfect, I sure as hell don't remember all of the details of that day either.

7. Reread my post, RoeBear
Excuse me, but total ignorance of history is a pretty good reason to diss this president. I didn't limit it to the weather at Kitty Hawk. Your post was unkind and inaccurate. And to say this just means I "hate Bush" is a total oversimplification. Bad day there, eh?

8. I remembered the details.
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 02:59 PM by XNASA
I read the accounts of the Wright Brothers recently. Then watched NOVA last night which triggered my memory about what I had read about that day 100 years ago.

I knew that Bush was wrong about this as soon as I read what he said.

It doesn't matter what you (someone who admits they don't know the details) or I (someone who does) says. Neither one of us was asked to give a speech at today's festivities in Kitty Hawk.

But I had been selected to give the speech, you can bet your ass I would have had my facts straight.

Besides, my question is, "Why would he lie about it?" What does he have to gain by talking out of his ass? Is he so convinced that he'll get a free ride by the Media that he thinks he can say anything? Or does he lack the intelligence to know the difference?

20. Since when did Bush care about facts?
He trumps Reagan as far as the teflon coating goes.
Hell, the man doesn't even read books or is able to have an original thought on his own.

9. Read And Learn
"The morning of December 17, the Wrights ventured from their shed and checked the wind. According to some accounts, they had a small portable anemometer that Octave Chanute had given them. The anemometer read between 22 and 27 mph. This would be a high wind for the Flyer, so the brothers were cautious. They rechecked the wind every five minutes until 10:00. It was still blowing hard. The weather had worsened overnight, and now there was an overcast. One account mentioned the air being almost empty of birds.

As they waited, hoping for the wind to slacken, wind whistled throught the cracks in the shed's boards, sending sand inside. The next turn was Orville's. He said he was willing to take a chance, in spite of the wind."

From my AOPA magizine, December 2003 edition.

So NO!, the conditions were not ideal, but they went ahead anyway and changed the world.

Think before you comment.

He only quoted Orville Wright's damned diary. I'd say Orville knew what the weather was like. Your quote was written by who?

13. I'm not disputing anything.
You told the man to "read and learn". My position is that he did. Or at least made a more than good faith effort. Its your condescending and dismissive tone that I'm having trouble with.

14. Oh well
Sometimes condescending and dismissive tone's are necessary. This was one of those time's. If you don't like it, that's not my problem.

He obviously took the first info he came to and ran with it. Prudent reseach would have had him discover that the prefered wind speed was lower than what they had that day. Nevertheless, they used what they had and made it work.

Read and Learn.

17. Weather in Kitty Hawk, December 17, 1903...
A steady north wind around 25 MPH. No precipitation. Nearly perfect launch conditions for the Wright Flyer. In fact, 3 days earlier on the 14th, which was the date of the actual "First Attempt", not only was the wind cooperative (being about 25 MPH and steady) but it was a glorious day all around. Beautiful sunny skies, etc. The weather wasn't the thing that impeded them on the 14th. They simply miscalculated their launch and stalled. It took two days to make repairs.

Weather in Kitty Hawk, December 17, 2003 during attempt to launch..

Rain. Then after the rain passed, low winds. Low winds = not enough lift. Which is exactly what happened. They never got off the ground today and simply ran into a mud puddle.

In defence of Chimp-boy, he never knows what he's talking about and I'm sure just read what was handed to him.
