Favorite LOTR scenes not in the movies. |
|
In the theatrical releases, not the EEs because not so many people have seen them.
If it's from ROTK make sure you put 'spoiler' in subject line.
Here's mine:
FOTR- Definately the Barrow Wights. Everybody whines about no Tom Bombadil but it was the barrow wights that really stood out for me in the book. It was also an important plot point too, since that's where Merry and Pippin pick up their magical blades, which become quite important in ROTK.
TTT- When the orcs retreat from Helms Deep, and run straight into a forest- that mysteriously wasn't there the night before. Apparently this is on the EE, and it was a big disappointment not to see it in the theatrical release, kind of ruined it for me.

1. You have _got_ to see the EE; the orc-eating forest |
|
is really something to see. Some of the characters get openly grossed out.....
Tom Bombadil is really weird; I never did figure him or his sweety out. I read some commentaries saying he was the Green man and so; it still seems like a disconnected piece. Would've been entertaining to see him in the movie, though.
One thing they left out/changed that was much for the better was Glorfindel, who was an arrogant snot. I liked much better Arwen taking his place, and standing off the Nazgul at the river. That was a terrific scene.

Was actually a stuffed doll that his kids had. He wrote The Hobbit for his kids, and it's fairly obvious that the early parts of FOTR were still in Hobbit mode; it doesn't really get dark and mythic until Rivendell.

2. The Orcs Run Right into a Forest that Wasn't There the Night Before |

Oh, yes, the hurons or crypto-Ents which appear nowhere in the movie. I liked them. It's been so long since I read the books that I can't remember any other specific scenes. I do get the feeling that there are a lot of them.

3. have not yet seen ROTK |
|
I'm hoping that the end of TTT was carried over, so I won't go into that. One thing I would have liked to have seen in TTT was the ents tearing down the tower of Isengard. They showed it a little, but it was way cooler in the book. That whole scene was lacking, even in the EE with the forest, eating the ocrs could have been done better.
Now if you want to talk about scenes in the movie which weren't in the book, we could probably start a new thread...
the elves at helms deep?? :wtf:

4. Merry and Pippins blades weren't magical . . . . |
|
Just very very old.
The Barrow Wights being left out were a disappointment (as was Bill Ferney being left out, I kinda liked when Sam threw an apple at him).
I was more disappointed by the changes historically, like when they entered the Mines of Moria and made it look like the battle had been fought there recently, when it had been a very, very long time in the books.

I know it includes Aragorn & Legolas, at least. Isn't there a waterfall involved?
