Really Disturbing Commercial |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 10:40 PM by 7th_Sephiroth
this couple are walking down this street and the man shouts out telling the world that he loves her, and the woman is like shut the f**k up idiot, than he pulls out a diamond ring and she's all like i love you, i doint know about you, but i find this wrong, and the gesture of telling the world you love a woman is more romantic than giveing her rocks mined by african slaves and sold by terrorists.

To me the message of the commercial is that just loving someone and letting them know that isn't enough, you must buy your loved one very expensive things so that they'll accept your love and love you back in return. I was really turned off by the commerical when I saw it.
Pretty sad really.

Of course, I have a loving, stable husband who doesn't need grand displays to show me his feelings.
I have never really thought diamonds were a particularly alluring gem; the way they are obtained just makes it worse.

Its no accident Fox affiliates used to show COPS just before Rush Limbaugh. A nice, edgy lower/middle-class fearfest before you get to hear the soothing voice of the one who will make all the cheap, craven baddies go away.

I hope someday synthetic diamonds make it really big on the market, so they drive "real" diamond industry into the ground.

hardness is the measure of how easily it can be scratched, if I shoot a huge chunk of diamond (the size and thickness of a police vest) it'll shatter and go through, along with diamond shrapnel...
now, if you could make very cheap, very thin sheets of synthetic diamonds (i don't think the crystal structure will alow this though) you could use them as a coating for cars making them scratch resistant.

"a million bucks to hire an architect" along with a law that says everyone must hire at least one architect in their lifetime (or 10?) should be the order of the day.
Hey, I can be selfish too!
Don't even GET ME STARTED on the requirement to have auto insurance! If it weren't a requirement, insurance rates would drop outta site overnite. And over half the population is driving around uninsured anyhow.

59. Strictly a marketing gimmick. |
|
There was a book, probably long since out of print, called "The American Way of Wedding." It's probably 25 years old now, but I read it as a teenager. One of the chapters discussed the ring.
The idea came from a daimond marketing consortium--I know, you are so surprised. Completely arbitrary; one month wouldn't have generated enough profit, one year was too over the top, etc.
Why people can't see through such obvious manipulation just makes me crazy. Now people take it as a long, honorable tradition.
I was engaged before I knew how diamonds are obtained--I had to talk my lover OUT of the 3 months thing. I have a timy, flawless, beuatiful little stone (I still wear it). We spent our money on our honeymoon--in Maui.

|
KNOW they are going to cause talk with the ad--in the case of "brands," for instance, Nike, no product is sold but the brand gets a boost by the talking up at the water cooler.
I remember that too, but no one should be feeling guilty. I don't think anyone is going to run out and by a diamond from this thread.

Has anyone else noticed that the cost of prescription drugs has gone up alongside the frequency of these idiotic commercials?? That is much more offensive to ME and to my wallet. I could give a crap if some guy wants to act a fool in public and buy a diamond for his woman, no matter where that diamond comes from.
But if this really does bother you that much, I saw this commercial the other day about a new drug for anxiety . . . . .

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but pharm. cos. pay for doctors "business trips," office equipment, etc. Pharmacists (my sis is one) get coffee cups (they can't prescribe, in fact, they often catch doctor's errors) while my PCP gets a water cooler emblazoned with the word Paxil (or some such thing).
I just got prescribed a questionable new drug that does a slightly more effective job than one I was already taking, but at considerably more risk. Thing is, the damn thing isn't yet covered by ANY medical insurance company.
Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmm . . .

the comercial wasnt ment for any sort of political message or anything close to that. sure, ive seen the comercial, its been on every holiday season for years. and even now and then through the rest of the year. it is a stupid comercial and annoys me. but really, i dont think the diamond add executives work on that many levels to work in a political message in 30 seconds on top of a business message. its ment to increase sales, nothing more. with the added side affect of annoyance. dont read too deep into it. time can be better spent elsewhere.

drugs companies are that, COMPANIES, the bottom line is money, if we abolished drug companies and create a goverment drug research bureau (one of the FEW things i actually WANT the goverments hands in) the costs would go down significantly with drug controll laws that limnit the sale of a drug to the bare minimum, and the drugs wont be made just to see stocks rise, they will be made to actually cure people, take AIDS for example, if "miracle" and"experimental" drugs werent so profitable there would probably be a cure by now

I wouldn't relate it the way you did, though. She tells him to be quiet because he's loud and making a scene. So he gives another token of his love.
I'm down with the whole "diamonds are just payment for services" argument, and most diamond commercials fall into that category (as well as most traditional trappings of romance), but there is true love, and sometimes giving a symbol of that love is the best way to express it. It's about the only commercial I've seen that works that way.
But then again, I'm married, so love and romance are far beyond my recent experiences.

57. Anytime I see a diamond ad... |
|
I cringe because I know the history behind those shiny baubles. There is a billboard right by my house that says, "Sighs matters" and next to it is a large diamond ring.
If more people only knew...

68. Why is there no PETA type campaign over diamonds? |
|
Daimonds are just about totally useless now; even industrial diamonds are being foregone in favor of synthetics.
It seems to me it could be very effective--after all, diamond prices are artificially high, they are almost completely a success through clever marketing (hardly the most beautiful or even rarest gem).
Lady Freedom, could we enlist you in a campaign, perchance???

They should combine ad campaigns for different products.
In this case, he brings out the diamond, and she replies that he should have gotten her fajitas.

70. I do not like this commercial as well. If it's the one where the woman |
|
hugs him AFTER he gives her jewelry and says,"I love this man". Blech. Give me the hug without the jewelry and it means more.

73. This is as much Ideological Propaganda... |

...as anything the Nazis pasted on the lamp posts back in the 30's. And no, I don't consider this hyperbole.

76. I had to read & reread your post |
|
I finally got it, but the lack of punctuation makes it very confusing.
Anyway, I personally can't consider the political implications of EVERY purchase I make. It would make it nigh on impossible to live in a near-unfettered capitalist society like ours.

How about the Lexus commercials where people surprise their S/O by giving them a car!
Man if that isn't the height of conspicuous consumerism. How many married couples would make a decision to buy a car without it being a completely joint decision?
I'll tell you how many. Just the few thousand for whom buying a Lexus is pocket change. For the rest of us, the message is, "if you really cared about your spouse (S/O), you'd buy them a $50k without them knowing about it."
I HATE those commercials. The Professor
