How often do you deep-fry food, at home? |
|
I think I haul out the fryer once or twice a year. I'm just curious, humor me.

I use my big ol' cast-iron skillet when I do fry, and that's really not all that often.
But...fried chicken's been sounding awful good lately...
(edited because I've apparently allowed my skill at spelling skillet to slack somewhat)

Once a year I'll haul out the pizelle irons for some pastry, or make a batch of frybread, but that's about it. All of the "fried" foods we eat are panfried.
I've got my eye on one of the newer, better designed fryers, so maybe if I end up with a gift card or something, I can convince myself that it's better than the obnoxious electric one I have now.

The limit of my frying is stir frying in a tablespoon or two of olive oil or, more often, cooking spray.

Especially this time of year. There's so many good veggies begging to be battered & deep fried.
Nothing like a pot full of oil to take the healthy right out of those veggies.

I'm not sure what the difference between frying and deep-frying is though. I guess what I do is moderate fry. I use vegetable oil though, not lard or fat or any of that stuff.

16. Hello fellow Tarheel state resident. |
|
I do a moderate fry too. I think deep fry means that the food you are cooking can float in the oil that it is being fried in. I have a deep fryer too and it has only been used once.

sometimes the oil will come halfway up the food I am cooking. Most of the time it is less, just to keep it from sticking and add a little color to the surface of the food. For sliced potatoes and onions though, I do let the oil cover them. They are yummy.

You can get good results with less grease by "oven-frying". I even make frozen French fries in the oven.

He's stopped deep-frying so much, which is good. I don't eat deep-fried foods as a rule (sauteed or stir-fried foods are OK with me, though). I might eat deep-fried foods once every couple of years. Just don't care for it too much.

the only way to make tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet breaded with panko) or tempura is to deep fry them. The whole trick to not having a greasy crappy mess is to have your oil hot enough.

46. Never. Not in years anyway. Falafel was about it, and I did that in |
|
a pan, usually, I think.
Many years ago I had to do deep-frying in a restaurant job, and clean the thing, and that put me off deep-fried food to a great extent for quite a while. Now, if I get a hankering for something deep fried (the only thing lately that's provoked me to do so is a craving for fried chicken that I satisfied a few times in the past eight months or so), I just run out and buy it ready-made.
My living situation and general lack of desire to get culinarily creative right now really limits me to just using the oven (been eating too many pizzas) and the microwave for everything.
