Any Bob Newhart fans here? |
|
I can't explain it-but the man slays me. Just for the record, my other favorite comic is Richard Pryor.

2. Newhart is one of my all time favorites. |
|
His records were groundbreaking and his tv shows are still funny after all these years. I still laugh while thinking of the speech of the Captain of the USS Codfish and of course, The Driving Instructor. Great stuff. Pryor was a comic genius as well as a keen observer of the world he lived in. Since you kicked this off, why don't you start a thread asking people to identify their favorite comedians?

11. Very dry, clever humor. |
|
His standup portrays ordinary people telling their stories, doing their things, and letting us see the humor in it. Reminiscent of Bob and Ray, other favorites of mine.

16. I once heard on the radio a live performance he did. |
|
In the skit, Bob was Sir Walter Raliegh on the phone with an European American settler who was trying to explain tobacco use in the New World. Bob kept questioning everything, asking, "They wrap it up in what, and do what?" :)
Maybe you gotta hear it to understand but he made smoking sound so fucking stupid.

Newhart is hysterical, and Rickles is just pathetic.

19. Some here must have played the "Bob" game |
|
Watch the Newhart show (first edition), and have a drink every time the name Bob was stated.
My friend Jeff and I brought it to an art - one drink (slug of beer) for each of three names ie: Bob, Emily, Carol; and one hit for each of three names ie: Jerry, Carlin, Howard. With two shows back to back, at the end of an hour, we were feeling no pain. :)

I loved the scene in his first sitcom, when he and Jerry and Howard get falling-down drunk while watching a football game and call a Chinese restaurant to order Moo-Goo Gai Pan. A takeoff on a Marx Brothers skit. "More goo".
I think of it every time I order it at the Chinese takeout.

|
Edited on Tue Aug-15-06 11:52 PM by fishwax
who really liked newhart (and kind of looked like him too). I was too young to remember the original series, but last winter I started watching them on DVD. They were hilarious, and a fun way to remember my grandpa. (okay, enough sap :))
