Name a truly terrible song, that if remade by the right artist... |
|
...would be really interesting if not actually good...and what artist would you have remake it?
I'm asking because I've had the persistent urge lately to remake a horrible song by one of the worst bands ever. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I think I'm just going to have to break down and do it.
Working For The Weekend by Loverboy
Everyone's watchin' to see what you will do Everyone's lookin' at you, Oh Everyone's wonderin' will you come out tonight Everyone's tryin' to get it right, get it right
Everybody's workin' for the weekend Everybody wants a new romance Everybody's goin' off the deep end Everybody needs a second chance, Oh
You want a piece of my heart you better start from the start you wanna be in the show c'mon baby let's go
Everyone's lookin' to see if it was you Everyone wants you to come through Everyone's hopin' it'll all work out Everyone's waiting to hold you out
Everybody's workin' for the weekend Everybody wants a new romance, hey yeah Everybody's goin' off the deep end Everybody needs a second chance, Oh
You want a piece of my heart you better start from the start you wanna be in the show c'mon baby let's go
Hey
You want a piece of my heart you better start from the start you wanna be in the show c'mon baby let's go
You want a piece of my heart you better start from the start you wanna be in the show c'mon baby let's go

Although arguably they already remade and called it something else.

16. They might even do it better than MBV |
|
Needs lots of reverb and whispery vocals to be done right either way.

Go for it.
(on edit... I'm thinking maybe a Ramones-type treatement would be fun... you know, anything but that slick, syrupy shit LoverBoy did)

6. Lisa Loeb did a great job with "I'm Gonna Keep On Lovin' You"... |
|
generally I hate both Loeb and REO Speedwagon, but somehow she was able to pull off a truly moving version of that bit of dreck. It can be done.

8. MORE, MORE, MORE by the Andrea True Connection |
|
It needs to be remade by Reel Big Fish or the Mighty Mighty Bosstones as an aggressive ska anthem.

10. I think that remake would sound good |
|
but I don't really think the original version is terrible. It's actually a really catchy song. Sure, it's nothing groundbreaking musically, but most Top 40 Hits aren't.

15. Duly noted - the original version is downright catchy |
|
Far from being terrible. But where else can I put forth the notion that it would make a great ska anthem?
More, more, more! How do ya like it? How do ya like it? More, more, more! You want some more, son? You wanna get some? MORE - MORE - MORE!!
I can dream...

21. Travis did it first, but I love them both... |
|
And both sort of harken to Debbie Gibson's "Shake Your Love" by Young Fresh Fellows. Done as a mournful piano dirge... aggravatingly unavailable, but great. You can hear an inferior version of it here: http://www.universaltrendsetter.org/Audio/Scott%20McCaughey%20-%20Shake%20Your%20Love.mp3

That's one of those songs that any cover would have to be tongue-in-cheek; it's definitely a song "of its era"! I actually kinda like it, though; the lyrics are mindless but musically it's kind of a fun song. Probably the best hit by Loverboy, for whatever that's worth, although I kind of like "Lovin' Every Minute of It" (the best Def Leppard song they never recorded, IMHO, though that's actually unfair, since I think, judging by release date, "Pour Some Sugar on Me" was a ripoff of "Lovin' Every Minute..."; I think the two groups shared producers).

It works really well as a reggae tune, actually! Try it and you'll see!

|
I'm a big fan of Queen but was never a fan of their song "Get Down Make Love". It was just too out there any a tad bit annoying to listen to.
Nine Inch Nails did a remake that absolutely rocked that song. THat's the style that Queen should have done the first time around

Steinman's usual handpuppet Meat Loaf, would be if not great, than at least listenable. ML has the chops at least, something I doubt anybody'd say about Bonnie Tyler.

Meat Loaf is planning on doing Steinman's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" (yeah, that really long Celine Dion song that was a hit a few years ago) on the Bat Out of Hell III (apparently, it was always planned as a trilogy, or they recently decided it was supposed to be) coming out in a few months. I thought that might be interesting.
