what print magazines do you recommend?
my subscription to Newsweek is expiring, and I see no reason to renew it . . . I'd like to hear some suggestions for alternatives . . . I'm looking for something with a progressive point of view that delves into the issues we talk about here on DU . . . I'm considering The Nation, but does anyone have any other ideas? . . . thanks . . .

1. Mother Jones, Utne Reader, and
Z Magazine are all good alternative sources for news and editorial opinions.

2. Look at Harper's
I think the Nation is very good (what does it say about America that it is regarded as so left-wing no companies want to advertise in it?), but I think Harper's is the classiest critic of Bush due to editor Lewis Lapham. Also, NY Review of Books very good.

3. Mainstream weeklies are generally a waste of time
I subscribed to USN&WR for a long time, but there was some piece of fluff reporting that really pissed me off and I cancelled the subscription.

I recommend and pretty much read cover-to-cover (yes, I have way too much time on my hands)

The New Yorker
The Atlantic
The Nation
National Geographic
Scientific American

5. New Yorker
Not all politics, but it definitely has a let wing slant. And there's an article or two each week criticizing the administration. Simply the best magizine in the U.S. I'be been reading it since high school in the 70s.

16. Another good reason to get a New Yorker subscription is
Edited on Wed Jul-30-03 05:28 PM by catzies
so little of their weekly content is on their website.

And they have the estimable Seymour Hersh.

14. Science News (weekly), too
Great readable recap for busy people on recent Science discoveries and news. Science is anathema to R-Wingers and staying informed is important to beat back the dogmatic anti-intellectualism of the Freep crowd.

8. progressive press
The best place to get the progressive point of view is a weekly newspaper, "The Liberal Opinion." Some of the authors they print are Helen Thomas, Paul Krugman, Molly Ivins, Bill Press, Norman Solomon, Tom Teepen, Ruth Gadebusch, Ralph Nadar and Maureen Dowd. Their articles provide great talking points for arguing with conservatives or writing letters to the Editor. You can subscribe on line: http://www.liberalopinion.com or at PO Box 880 Vinton, IA 52349-0880.

http://www.economist.com/ - global news, better than time newsweek national report and all that trash
http://www.prospect-magazine.co.uk/ - insightful, best monthly liberal publication in my experience

10. My list
Mother Jones
The Nation
The Progressive
Washington Spectator (Letting that one expire. Everything in it I've read here already)
Sierra Club
Read Harper's at the library

Let Columbia Journalism Review expire because it wasn't hard-hitting enough. Used to get Brill's Content and George before they expired.

And, yes, I have magazines (and books) all over the house. :-)

19. Right now we have long-standing subscriptions to
Harper's and Mother Jones. Every now and then I'll pick up magazines like The Progressive or The Nation and send it to my husband in mail drops to his submarine. When he's out to sea, he's totally cut off from the world and gets desperate for liberal reading material (I think the most popular magazines on the sub are either porn mags or porn-lite like Stuff and Maxim). When he's done reading them, he leaves them in the officer's head to piss people off.

28. The Wilson Quarterly.....
It's published by the Smithsonian Institute, and is sort of an intellectual 'readers digest'. Covers a lot of ground, very thoughtful and balanced, and points you to places you wouldn't ordinarily look if you want to go into something in real depth.
