Poll question: if awakened in the middle of the night by a sound outside, what would you |
|
want that sound to be?
I get the first five all the time.
The last four, fortunately, have not awakened me (except sirens a couple of times) in the last five years, since I moved out of a nasty part of Long Beach, CA, and to a semi-rural spot in Southern Maryland.
Oh, to be awakened by an owl. Sublime.
It's a beautiful night, everyone. I hope it's beautiful where you are. :grouphug:

2. Out of those choices, rain or thunderstorm. |
|
I don't mind crickets or cicadas either.

|
Yeah, that's what I'd want. Not that I'd join them, it'd just be nice to hear.

8. The only one I haven't been woken up by is... |
|
"This is the police. We have the house surrounded." However, when I was a little kid and lived in Union City, my dad's best friend was a cop and he'd stop by our building pretty regularly during his patrols and say, "Jack, I know you're in there. Come out with your hands up!" It was his version of saying hi. My reaction was pretty much along the lines of "Uncle Joey is here!"
But yeah, I live in nature now, but I grew up in a pretty high crime area. My grandmother was mugged outside the door, we heard it and we ignored it because we didn't realize it was her getting mugged. Don't worry, she's a crazy old bitch, so she actually chased down the mugger and they both ended up having to be restrained by the cops.

11. I love the sound of distant thunder at night |
|
The occasional flash of lightning, the sound of the rain drumming against the roof.
*sigh*
Somehow, it's so soothing.

13. An owl. The others are irritating... or worse. |
|
The police tops it, especially when they are no longer outside but inside while your friends are screaming obscenities and throwing things like they want to be shot, and all this before you wake up enough to figure out what the hell is happening.
But my all time favorite "other" was when our neighbor knocked on our door at two in the morning. He was covered with blood, it was flowing down his face, but he asked very politely, "Can you please call 911? My wife hit me with my whiskey."
An owl. That sounds nice.

14. Definitely An Owl, Baby |
|
The barred owl that sings nearby is an absolute joy. What a lovely sound. I could do without the screech owl, though.
Last weekend I was awakened by three owls all calling at once. One was a barred owl, one a screech owl, and the other I have no idea. They were all nearby, and sounded like they were in a tree right next to our deck.
I love owls. I also love the sound of a whippoorwill, which, IMHO, should have been one of your choices. But I love you most of all! :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

16. There were cats fighting in my driveway the other night. I tried to chase |
|
them off, but instead, they dove into my flowerbed :grr: and proceeded to scrap it up in there, much to the destruction of some of my best flowers. I threw a Pogo Moon Bouncer in their general vicinity, and they finally ran off. They have stupid pet owners; those two cats are always loose.

Now that I live in Oklahoma, "thunderstorm" doesn't mean what it did back in New Mexico.

24. Nothing nicer than the sound of rain on the roof and in the trees |
|
when you're snug and warm in bed.
Back in June, about 7AM, I was awakened by the sound of what initially sounded like a child screaming. I jumped out of bed and ran to a back window and saw a fox confronting a cat. I banged on the window and the cat ran off, followed by the fox. Turned out the fox was protecting two kits from the cat---that's how I found our that I had a fox den in my back yard, two adults and two kits. I've had lots of fun watching and photographing them and I've had virtually no rabbits or chipmunks on my property this summer.

On New Year's Day this year I woke up and heard a mockingbird singing. I can't think of a more joyous sound to hear first thing in the morning!
