I have tons, but right now it's "It's a good think I haven't slept in weeks, because right now it seems that times are hard for dreamers." That's a Boys Night Out line.

8. "...and I was gripped...by that deadly phantom..." |
|
The Clash's "Death is a Star", from Combat Rock. I don't know why I love it so much except that line, and the atmosphere of the song as a whole, is so mysterious and compelling, somehow. Here's the rest:
And I was gripped by that deadly phantom I followed him through hard jungles As he stalked through the back lots Strangling through the night shades
The thief of life Moved onwards and outwards to love
In a one stop only motel A storm bangs on the cheapest room The phantom slips in to spill blood Even on the sweetest honeymoon
The killer of love Caught the last late Niagara bus
By chance or escaping from misery Bu suddeness or in answer to pain Smoking in the dark cinema You could see the bad go down again And the clouds are high in Spanish mountains And a Ford roars through the night full of rain.
The killer's blood flows But he loads his gun again
Make a grown man cry like a girl To see the guns dying at sunset
In vain lovers claimed But they never had met.

35. From Simon & Garfunkle through my short story ... |
|
from ... The Dogs of War © 2003 (DemoTex)
Tracer rounds drifted up towards us, flashing from the big guns below. Initially, the few red-orange balls floating up – five at a time, desultorily - seemed harmless; even eerily beautiful. “When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light that split the night, and touched the sound of silence,” played the sentient masterpiece of Paul and Art. Then, as suddenly as a desert cloudburst, the anti-aircraft fire poured up in sheets. The NVA gunners were shooting payback from three guns; payback for the B-52 strikes. Payback, as the saying goes, is a motherfucker. Twenty-four terrified and pissed-off young North Vietnamese soldiers, some probably chained to the guns, were shooting at us with inch-and-a-half explosive tracer shells, fed in five-round charger clips, with a rate-of-fire of 180 rounds-per-minute. The 37 mike-mike anti-aircraft crews tracked our Grumman Mohawk, bracketing us with thunder and lightning. “But my words like silent raindrops fell, and echoed in the wells of silence,” the folk singers’ haunting lyrics addressed my darkest fears.

Tell me who’s the real patriots The archie bunker slobs waving flags? Or the people with the guts to work For some real change Rednecks and bombs don’t make us strong We loot the world, yet we can’t even feed ourselves Our real test of strength is caring Not the toys of war we sell the world Just carry on, thankful to be farmed like worms Old glory for a blanket As you suck on your thumbs

50. "Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the World" |
|
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission.
Eyes of the World
Right outside this lazy summer home you don't have time to call your soul a critic, no Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home wondering where the nuthatch winters Wings a mile long just carried the bird away
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the World but the heart has its beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings but the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of its own
There comes a redeemer and he slowly too fades away There follows a wagon behind him that's loaded with clay and the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom and decay The night comes so quiet and it's close on the heels of the day
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world but the heart has its beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings but the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of its own
Sometimes we live no particular way but our own Sometimes we visit your country and live in your home Sometimes we ride on your horses Sometimes we walk alone Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world but the heart has its beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings but the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of its own

the rapper rakim (from "you know i got soul")tops them all with tempo/timing: Thinking of this, you keep repeating you miss The rhymes from the microphone soloist And you sit by the radio, hand on the dial, soon As you hear it, pump up the volume
he carried over 'miss...the rhymes' and 'soon...as you hear it' it was 7 years before i realized he did that. artful, and it makes me remember those lines.
also, kool moe dee (from "i go to work"): I came to roam The land I own And stand alone on the microphone Daddy's home Open the door playtime is over...

52. Here are five that never fail to make me cry with their poetic beauty. |
|
"She cries that life is like Some movie, black and white Dead actors faking lines..." --Hemorrage, by Fuel
"She parks her car outside of my house Takes her clothes off Says she's close to understanding Jesus And she knows she's more than just a little misunderstood She has trouble acting normal when she's nervous But 'round here, she's always on my mind...." --Round Here, by Counting Crows
"And you may ask yourself, 'Am I right, or am I wrong'? And you may say to yourself, 'My God! What have I done'?"--Beautiful House (I think) by the Talking Heads
"When the sun descended and the night arose I heard my father cursing everyone he knows He was dangerous and drunk, defeated and corroded By failure and envy and hate It was always winters and the dreams would freeze Nowhere to hide, and no leaves on the trees And my father's eyes were blank as he hit me again and again and again...." --Objects in the Rear View Mirror, by Meat Loaf
"If shame had a face, I think it would kinda look like mine If it had a home, would it be my eyes? Would you believe me if I said I'm tired of this? Here we go now, one more time....." --Sick Cycle Carousel, by Lifehouse
Bonus: my favorite Christian song
"Sometimes the night was beautiful Sometimes the sky was so far away Sometimes it seemed to slip so close You could touch it, but your heart would break... And sometimes I think of Abraham How one star he saw had been lift for me He was a stranger in this land And I am that, no less than he...." --Sometimes by Step, by Rich Mullins
