What is your favorite coffee?
I go to this little Middle Eastern cafe sometimes - Cafe Jaffa - and they make this absolutely wonderful turkish coffee. It is kind of like espresso only the flavor is just so much better.

It is really finely ground black coffee - very strong flavor - with cardamon. It comes in a very small cup and costs $2.

Anybody know how to make this stuff at home? I think they make it in a pot on the stove. But where do you buy turkish coffee ground up like that?

3. you should be able to buy the coffee in a middle eastern market
if you can find one. We always have Turkish coffee when we eat at the Egyptian restaurant....my husband is so NOT a coffee drinker but he first time we went there HE ordered it out of total curiosity and now it is a tradition. It gets real sludgy so you have to let it sit before you pour and then sit a bit more before you drink.

Greek coffee is very similar. Ultra fine grind, almost like talk. Coffee, sugar and water brought to a boil then allowed to sit. They use a pot that is larger at the bottom than at the top and take it off just as it boils.

Now in the grocery where you can get your coffee ground, you can set the grinder for Turkish grind. I used to use a Melitta Cone filter coffee maker and the Turkish grind worked really well in it. I don't know about the flavorings but you could check out World Market, or any place that sells imported foods for preflavored beans perhaps?

Now I want to go to King Tut's for lunch and I don't even feel like getting dressed.

5. That coffee is addictive. I love the taste of it.
I went on the net and found out that you need a special grinder (or like you said you put it on Turkish grind) and a special long handled pot for the stove. But it doesn't look like those things cost a lot. I think the grinder is about $10 and the pot isn't bad either.

I have to see if there is a mideastern store here in town - I'm sure there is.

14. For home...
Seattle Mountain Coffee from Costco. Not only are their varieties (currently enjoying their Sumatran) high quality, but you can't beat the prices - less than $20.00 for 3 pounds.

My favorite cafe is an indie called Macy's (NOT to be confused with the high-end department store - in this case, it's the name of the owner) in Flagstaff, AZ. They roast the beans right there, and damn if their carafe of French press doesn't beat all hell. I used to spend many a morning reading and getting my fix.

I spent many years and summers in Flag, and loved trekking over to Macy's. Food was so good, too. I never liked coffe till my early 30's, when I tried some of theirs. Do you still go? I haven't been back in 8 years, I really miss the town. I still regularly use a Macy's mug with the guy lounging in the coffee cup.

Oh, and to make Turkish coffee you need an ibrik:

Use dark-roast, fine-ground coffee (Turkish is ground even finer than espresso; the coffee grinders they have at supermarkets usually have a 'Turkish' setting). You add the grounds to the water over medium heat (you should add one or two whole cardamom pods, and you can add sugar if you want). You bring it to a boil, stirring the while, then remove from the flame and let settle. Repeat the process of brining the coffee to a boil while stirring three more times, then serve.

31. Middle-eastern coffee is awesome!
I've had Moroccan coffee, which is strong coffee with a hint of rosewater--amazing. And of course, Coffee in France and Italy. I think it's the ambiance there as well as the flavour.

I spent almost a year in Jamaica, and can attest to the tastegasmic sensation that is Blue Mountain.
Same for Hawaii--been to the Kona plantations, and it's a coffee lover's dream since you can taste test there till you have a seizure.

But check this out: my friend just came back from Addis Ababa, and brought me Ethiopean Coffee. Unbelievably delish!

Bottom line: there's a lot of yummy coffee in the world, and fortunately for me, it's a legal drug so I can't get arrested for flagrant abuse.:hangover:

68. I'm in Michigan...
and we have a huge middle eastern population in the SE corner of the state.

Speaking of rosewater, one of the pastry shops owned by a middle eastern family makes "cashew fingers" (phyllo dough, cashews or pistachios, and honey - a lot like baklava, but rolled tightly about finger-size). There is also a variation of that where rosewater is infused into the honey before the pastry is saturated with it. Wow. Just wow. Amazing flavor.

except in the winter when I use it to make my hot cocoa with. I will sometimes have a cup at a small indie coffeehouse that sells fair trade just to give them the business when I'm in that area. Otherwise, it just ain't my bag...makes me too edgy. The husband on the other hand must, must, must have coffee everyday. We buy fair trade from our little fair trade shop when we can afford it, which isn't terribly often.

my coffee cannister is a mixture of a few kinds (sporadically bought,) always some light and some dark roast. I make it in an old Krups espresso machine when I'm at home. When I am travelling it's just whatever I can get.

For pure nostalgia, I'll pick up a can of Cafe Du Monde (from the cafe in New Orleans, groceries sell it all over) coffee...dark and thick, coffee and chicory, stirred up with steamed milk. Mmm-MMM!

69. Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk - you can only get this
done properly in a Vietnamese restaurant, where it drips slowly through a little filter thing right at your table, then you stir the milk into it and pour it over ice - fantastic. Coffee houses can't do it right. You have to go to a Vietnamese-owned restaurant or cafe.
