RIP Etta Baker, Piedmont Blues Guitarist, Dead at 93 |
|
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 08:24 AM by Richardo
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4536802 Just heard on NPR this morning that this phenomenal talent died over the weekend. She had two CDs issued late in life, one with Taj Mahal. She is also found in some field recordings from the 50s and 60s and is credited with influencing the guitar styles of the 60s folk movement. She played guitar for most of her life and was still playing in her 90s. Do yourself a favor and get one of her records - you won't regret it. Farewell, Etta. http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?z=y&EAN=601163000502&itm=1http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?z=y&EAN=672009100625&itm=3

I probably have a cut or two of hers on some of my blues collection CD's. I will definitely check her out.
Pretty soon, all the old blues greats will be gone.

4. It's very non-traditional blues |
|
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 08:58 AM by Richardo
Actually, it's VERY traditional, just not in the Memphis/Kansas City/Chicago style. More to the mountain-music/Appalachia side of the spectrum. Her songs are all instrumental, just acoustic guitar, sometimes banjo. Very 'accessible', as they say in the snooty music critic business. :hi:
