When did patterned sheets go out of style????
I needed a new set of sheets and went today to Bed Bath and Beyond to get a new set because one wore out. All my sheets are fairly old (10 years) and all have/had (including the recently departed ones) great patterns. Virtually everything there was a solid color or really boring lame prints. So I ended up buying pale-green solids.

Do people these days want boring beds???

1. I think pattered sheets went the way...
...of lace curtains, chintz cushions and flock carpeting. It's irremediably tacky to current design thinking. Give it another five years and we'll all be back in Laura Ashleyland again. :)

3. Hmmmmmmmm.....
I have no lace curtains (no curtains at all since I have wonderful architectural windows with built-in blinds), no chintz cushions and no flocked carpeting. But one surviving set of sheets is Laura Ashley.

:D

9. I've had the same problem!
I've looked at Target and several department stores and can't find any pretty printed sheets with a decent thread count. I'm going to try looking on the internet, as I am tired of driving all over the place searching for my ideal set of sheets! x( I know you said you already settled for the solid sheets, but if you do decide to keep searching, I'd suggest trying something like Froogle.com, as that way you can search many stores all at once.

19. In the design world, simple and plain sheets are "in"
And the color choices out there these days, in my opinion as a designer, are about as exciting as the blah colors of the '70s home decor accents.

You may do better by checking eBay. It IS very difficult to find interestingly patterned sheet sets these days.

Ah, well -- I told my husband he's sleeping on Ralph Lauren sheets from the last century, whether he likes it or not.

I'm sure he never notices it, as long as there's something to sleep on.

and was told they were gone with the wind. They have some on the Internet as specialty items. The last set I bought at Meier & Frank (now Macy's) in 1998 -- a Ralph Lauren print called the Canyon Collection.

And my Colonial quilt? Out of fashion.

I dislike solid colored sheets. They show ever spot. So, fashion be damned. I'm going with patterned sheets.

Dammit. I hate it when fashion passes me by. :sarcasm:

22. I love solid sheets
I have a great collection of antique quilts & printed duvet covers for my down comforter. So the solid sheets allow me to match those pieces. In fact my bed is far less boring since I went with solid sheets.

I think a lot of people use duvets & quilts so maybe they prefer the solid sheets for the same reason I do?

26. You're probably right, but my husband doesn't like comforters or
quilts. I got him used to sleeping only with a beloved white dual control electric blanket years ago, and now, he won't switch.

The bed dressing on our bed from bottom to top is: fitted mattress cover for allergies, then bottom fitted sheet,(husband goes here), top flat sheet, electric blanket, top PATTERNED Southwestern flat sheet on top of that. Anything else and he screams bloody murder -- well, not that bad, but he won't condone anything else. He hates any extra weight on top of the electric blanket. It's too much trouble to undress a king-size comforter, where most of the patterns go today, from the bed nightly.

32. Good morning, Maine lady! You're in the other Portland, right?
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 05:50 AM by Radio_Lady
I guess there are two kinds of people -- I love decorating a home, and my husband couldn't care less.

Funny story:

We met in Boston in the summer of 1972. I moved into his home with my two kids -- and a blonde Cocker Spaniel dog. We married in February 1973. He had three kids -- his first wife had died of cancer in 1971. It was sort of busy in that house with five kids and two parents.

Anyway, among my possessions was SOLID colored, forest green rug 8' x 10' -- and I promptly rolled it out in one of the rooms.

My dog Buffy kept shedding and shedding on that rug, and I kept after the hair almost daily with a vacuum cleaner. Weeks went by -- and I finally asked, "Do you mind all that fur on the rug, y'know, from the dog?"

New husband replied, "WHAT FUR?"

After that, I was less sensitive to the almost constant clutter from seven people. But, now, it's just the two of us. He still doesn't notice most things, so I could get away with murder if I wanted to. However, we do have one rule -- the bed in the master bedroom has to be made up every day. Guess who gets to do that?

In peace,

Radio_Lady in Oregon

Or at least something similar to it. (Wasn't everything?)

I used to ask smart-ass young callers to my radio program, "HOW OLD ARE YOU? I HAVE TOWELS OLDER THAN YOU!" It was sort of a funny put-down!

Now my program has no call-ins, but you folks are my audience.

Thanks for the SHEEEEEEET... naw, not that yucky stuff.....

I sleep in a twin size bet at home, so it's easy to find kid's sheets for it. I've got snowflake prints sheets that I use durring some of the winter months. And I found these really cute cartoony insect/fish/other random stuff print sheets at Costco a while back.
