8. It was amusing because... |
|
despite the fact that the OP stated in his post that he was a man...some people didn't really bother to read, appeared to assume he was female because of the topic, and had little hissy fits about angry man-haters.
What could have been an interesting discussion among men about what they could do to change the societal pressures that too often push them towards violence...instead just became another tired episode in the gender wars.

12. if we could all admit that both genders |

have their areas of issues we'd be better for it. There are plenty of psycho postal women out there, as men! Why not just look at the messed up emotions of "humanity" and examine where the comes from? That's a much more insightful peek into society.

14. actually the statistics don't agree with you... |

in terms of taking up arms and blowing people away...men are much more likely than women to do that. I'm not saying there are not psycho women out there. I'm just saying that they tend to manifest that in different ways than men. While some women do turn outward and hurt others, they are more likely to internalize and harm themselves. My thought on that is that society and role expectations shape how we react to overwhelming stress and how we allow ourselves to process our emotions.
An interesting observation from someone I work with who was the superintendent of one of my agency's facilities (I work in juvenile justice). She has worked with both boys and girls and the biggest difference she found was that boys came in with no emotional vocabulary...whatever they felt the only word they had for it was "pissed". They were always pissed. That's how we raise too many of our boys and it's sad.

is that if we as a society can't even ask the question "what makes men go postal?" (please guys, read that as "some men" not ALL men) or questions like it...then we'll never manage to do anything about the aforementioned societal pressures on men. The patriarchy hurts men. We can argue all day about whether it hurts men as much as it does women...but I don't want to go there. I just hope some day we can have a conversation about why some men continue to support a system that hurts them. And I hope we can talk about ways to deal with the role they are forced into that stunts their growth as human beings as much as the traditional female role stunts women.
But it's up to men to really get into the meat of that conversation.

I started a thread that I honestly thought was going to be a good discussion about this, I got nailed by some women as not being serious and interestingly enough it got locked. There was actually some good discussion going on there too. So that was my contribution to the cause for this month.
Now I feel like this ----->

15. That thread was just getting interesting... |

I love threads where I manage to fight with someone and have a deep, meaningful conversation with someone else at the same time. There was a guy on there that we were starting to find common ground and BAM...locked.

That is the way ideas are formated. People discussing things with different ideas and points of view and eventually start to come to an understanding. I didn't start it as flamebait, but that's what it was locked for. When discussion is stopped that way it sure doesn't help to formulate any real understanding between people.
But oh well..lol, what ya gonna do?
