PARTY PLANNERS! FANS OF ALL THINGS POLYNESIAN! HELP!
We're giving my BIL a 50th BD party. The theme is "BOBII FIVE-0" (his name is Bobby) and obviously the food and decor will be in a Hawaiian luau style.

If you have any game, food, decor, or dress ideas that aren't necessarily cliche, let me know. I'm accepting whatever help I can get.

Thanks!

1. Believe it or not, I have actually looked into this very thing!
Here's a website: http://www.myislandparty.com/

There are many more, too, when you google "polynesian parties."

Don't forget the Mai Tai and Blue Hawaiian drinks (or similar)! Have fun!!

;)

I collect Hawaiiana and I also have some CDs that would be perfect for the party.

There are a couple of great stores in Seattle for food, but that is also not a big help to you. However, this place ships and they have paper plates, napkins and the ever-popular what-not:

Anyway, good luck, that sounds like a fun party theme.

On edit - I found a link that had some game ideas: http://www.alohafriendsluau.com/games.html

4. Uh, sorry if this is too kitsch-y (tiki is cool, what can I say?)
you've got:

My office did a "Hawiian luau" party once, and the dress was just "hawiian print shirt" and they gave out the cliche plastic lei things. I was tempted to go wahini bikini, but alas--dress code, you know?

It seems like there's a wealth of food ideas, though:

Pineapple and coconut are pretty versatile, really. The laua idea seems to call for a nice varied spread--so a bunch of dishes can be used. I think when you go "theme" though--cliche is going to creep in, somewhat.

Buy a crapload of those unripe coconuts they sometimes sell at the market -- the ones that are sold for their milk content, not for their meat. They cost about a buck a piece, probably. Then get them nice and cold in the fridge or freezer. Then get a clean electric drill or find a way to make two holes in each coconut you serve. Then add booze and ingredients witih a funnel. I have used tequilla triple seq and lime. You can do Pina coladas, etc. When done mixing each drink, shake the coconut while covering the holes of course. Then stick a straw in it (fat slurpee type straws are best) and serve. Guests can reuse their coconut throughout the night if you dont want to buy too many. Thats my tiki secret. Good luck Happy Partying!
