12. Yes, triple digits per day |

but you have to be REALLY good at the second language (enough to function as an adult and hold down a job in the target culture) and have the ability to "change channels" in your head--which is why I only translate and not interpret. I can't switch back and forth between languages.

How do you go about getting credentials and work for that sort of thing? I've just always spoken spanish and translate in real-time in my head all the time.

21. If you want to work for the courts |
|
or social service agencies, check and see if your state has a certification program.
There are no legal requirements unless you work for government agencies, although some colleges have training programs (Monterey Institute of Int'l Studies and SUNY-Binghamton, for example).
The hard part is convincing people that you speak Spanish at a professional level. Find out if anyone in the foreign language departments at local universities is a certified ACTFL tester for Spanish. You will need to test at "Superior." Then you can go to agencies (look in the phone book) and tell them that you are rated ACTFL Superior. They will probably want to test you before giving you any jobs.

I know a comic graphic novelist (Jeff Smith-old friend who loooves his job), and I have a supermodel friend who says that Fashion photographers loooove their jobs too, so good choice there as well. But my pal who owned a Gallery in Carmel thought it was hell, and gave up on it (artists kept flaking out on him) so I'd vote for the first two!(Hey, if they can do it, why can't you?);-)
For myself, I would like:
1.)to be the next Dr. Suess
2.)wealthy philanthropist do-gooder
3.)Film director-everything from big budget theatrical releases to National Geographic specials.
Maybe I could manage #1 someday, if I weren't so busy paying the bills. From what I've seen, those that acheive their dream careers never did so alone, so I guess finding a supportive mate is the first order of business.
