17. how exactly does wearing a tie enhance their job performance? |
|
It is at least a sign of subservience and at worst an attempt at a false assurance of competence and authority.
I think the computer industry, Hollywood, and academia do it right--the people who work dress in a way that doesn't interfere with their work. The people who wear ties literally are what the tie looks like affixed to their neck--a leech.

It's just one of those things that is common to "business attire". Wearing skirts/dresses and heels don't enhance a woman's job performance but they're expected at most professional jobs.

|
Maybe it's a generational thing.
If you can't take time to put forth a clean professional appearance. THat is the way people will remember you and by association your work. As the old saying goes First impressions may not always be right. But thats the way to bet.
Seriously a tie takes less than 30 seconds to put on. And with a proper fitting shirt shouldn't be causing any discomfort.

Are you serious?
Most professional men wear ties to work. In sales, at the very least, it is expected that the vendor dress one level above the customer. It's a sign of respect to your client that you take the time to dress professionally.
Are women who wear suits and hose leeches also?

82. I think this will eventually fade out |
|
It came into style at all because people wanted to be posers, pretend to be richer than they are when dressing up became affordable to the middle and lower class.
Now that a suit is not necessarily a sign of having money, it keeps going out of inertia, tradition, and peer pressure.
If someone shows up dressed comfortably, that tells me they do their job well and don't have to depend on appearances unrelated to how they do their job.
If I went to a law office, and all the lawyers weren't wearing ties, I would think those guys were actually working. If they were wearing ties, I'd think they were waiting to take my money.

I work in courtrooms frequently. There is a particular judge who is not only a complete idiot with respect to the law, but a mean-spirited Fundie prima donna asshole as well, who despite the strict separation between church and state has stated that he seeks guidance for his decisions in his religion. Wait, it gets better - His daddy was a judge and he rode in on daddy's coattails. Go figure. Anyway the guys will save their Mickey Mouse or "no bullshit" or other equally appropriate ties to wear on days spent in his courtroom. It's funny as hell to watch the parade of "message" ties appearing before him, a very public privare joke and Junior still hasn't caught on after all these years.

Working in a rather conservative environment (diplomatic corps) dictates that. Even on Fridays. But when I get home from work, the tie is the first thing to come off, then the wrist watch. I really don't like wearing either.

I can think of a couple, like the Philippines and Israel, where even the head of state wears an open collar shirt unless they go to a country where all the leaders wear ties.
The only time I thought one of our diplomats (or whatever you would call him in this role) should have been dressed more formally was when Gen. Jay Garner was wearing polos or open shirts while the Iraqis he was dealing with were all wearing suits or equally formal traditional Arab clothes.

HOWEVER, sitting in the cook county (chicago) court witness room area, i saw several detectives awaiting their turn on the stand in various cases, who looked like they came from ALL walks of life: a mid 50ish latino man who looked like a regular worker type, a young alternakid type who looked like a heroin addict--the only difference was the shield on a chain around his neck and the ankle holstered .38 and .9mm on his hip.
appearances can be VERY deceiving.

Some ties say "I haven't quite grown up beyond 8 year-old humour", others say "I have to wear a tie for work &c. but I hate them", others say "I have to wear a tie, but I really have no basic grasp of how to match clothes", others say "I like to present a good image, and as part of being well-presented wear a well-matched tie".
I'll refrain from speculation as to which of the above is apparent from my tie-wearing.

56. another reason to dislike ties: distance versus familiarity (like clowns) |
|
The trend toward informality in dress and speech in our society isn't an accident.
In the past, formal dress was a way of establishing the status of someone you might see all the time, and was definitely a marker of being upper class until clothes were mass produced. Then when suits got cheap, everybody bought them to look richer, like a fake rollex.
Today, people are so atomized and disconnected from each other that we don't like anything that reminds us another person is our superior, inferior, or a peer than only wants to have a formal relationship with you. A tie is like a wall creating distance. Someone dressed like a friend at least creates the impression that they aren't trying to pull something over on you, and could at least potentially become a friend. The same person in a tie is at best a business contact.
Similarly, living in cities gives people a degree of street smarts, so you know that someone dressed up is trying to take something from you.
Just like clowns. In the past, if you lived in a small town, and you saw someone who hid their identity in funny make up, it would just be a novelty, and nothing more. Today, when someone tries to hide their identity, we assume they are up to no good are we are probably right. Hopefully, FBI profilers will be able to identify potential clowns before they put on their make up and big shoes and kill someone.

Serious tie fetishist, me. A man in a tie makes my knees go all wobbly.
I have a huge collection of them. (Ties, not men, damn it! Chance would be a fine thing....)
I've worn them as ties, belts, armbands, pocket swatches.... I've used them to secure lovers to the bed.......
I have an ongoing competition with a friend as to which of us can find the ugliest tie.... and wear it. I think he's winning, barely.
I've got two new ones.... and I can't wait to wear them.
Khash.

67. Depends on the man, the tie, and what else he's wearing. |

I don't really notice so much unless it's a garish or tremendously ugly tie, an obvious polyester clip-on (with a short-sleeve buttondown, those make me think 'Oh, no! A Mormon missionary!"), or it clashes with his shirt/suit/pocket square (assuming he's wearing a suit).

Loosen the damn thing up. You are making me gag. It looks too tight.
That's my first thought when I see someone in a tie.

staple their tie to the end of the rope. No need for noose--it would be redundant.

Ties are pretty common downtown in a big East Coast city. Probably become rarer as you move westward...
My S.O. looks great in a dress shirt and tie, and will put one on to go out to dinner or to the theater. His boho actor friends razz him about "dressing up", but I like the look.

If it's a co-worker of mine, I get quiet and maybe say "I'm sorry," because the assumption is he's going to a funeral.
If the guy's really hot, I think, "mmmm, leash."
Otherwise, I barely notice.

I always want to grab it and take a pair of scissors to it. Of course I also have my own lucky tie that has helped me get a couple of jobs.

98. "When can I go home?" |
|
or "What was I thinking when I showed up here today?" Or, "If he thinks his tie somehow increases my respect for him or his power with me, he's destined to be disillusioned." Or, in my classroom on the first day of school, "What's with all the girls wearing ties in various states of knotting and in various places on their body?" And then, a few days later, "I wonder what happened to the ties?"

cuts the blood flow to the brain so they can make lame decisions. The first thing I did when I moved into an upper management position was tell my staff I wanted them to dress comfortably and get rid of the damn ties. I hate them. They are nothing more than a fancy leash. Might as well have a ring through the nose connected to a chain as wear a tie.
