1. And the anti-PETA crowd will call that all lies in 3...2...1...
I think all people should watch what really goes on inside factory farms. It would definitely cause many people to reconsider their eating habits.

2. this theory bothers me:
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 01:56 PM by idgiehkt
"Because Butterball's current slaughter method gives workers access to live birds, the animals often suffer when workers become frustrated or bored and desensitized, as was the case at this Butterball plant and the other poultry plants that PETA has investigated."

I don't think animal cruelty is endemic to humans, something they revert to when bored. I really don't. I think it's learned.

This is really horrifying and upsetting. Verbal descriptions is about all I can handle, pictures and video really wreck me when it comes to stuff like this. I know this kind of abuse goes on in the production of every single kind of animal product there is. I've seen enough neglect, questionable behavior and in one case abuse at places like kennels and animal shelters and vets that are supposed to be pro-animal to know that this stuff must be present in horrifyingly high levels every where that animals are harvested for their body parts.

edit: thanks for posting, bi-baby, good to see you.

19. My thoughts.
I don't think animal cruelty is endemic to humans, something they revert to when bored. I really don't. I think it's learned.

I'd argue somewhere in the middle...that it takes a certain kind of person to work on a kill-floor for any real length of time (most people who do it, do it because they lack other options and quit ASAP.) and that sort of person is potentially of a greater predisposition to this sort of behavior. (People who enjoy this sort of work and stay long-term kinda scare me for this reason.)

We've done stuff for PETA, but really don't agree with them or Peter Singer.

4. Hey, I don't agree with PETA or Peter Singer all the time.
Why would be a long post and somewhat inappropriate for the lounge, but I just want to point that out. AR is hardly monolithic or dogmatic.

8. from the link
"Butterball workers were documented punching and stomping on live turkeys, slamming them against walls, and worse during an undercover investigation at a Butterball slaughterhouse in Ozark, Arkansas.

One Butterball employee stomped on a bird's head until her skull exploded, another swung a turkey against a metal handrail so hard that her spine popped out, and another was seen inserting his finger into a turkey's cloaca (vagina).

One worker told an investigator: "If you jump on their stomachs right, they'll pop ... or their insides will come out of their ," and other Butterball workers frequently bragged about kicking and tormenting birds. Read more in the investigators' log notes.

PETA's investigators discovered these horrors between April and July, 2006, during an undercover investigation at a Butterball plant that slaughters approximately 50,000 birds each day."

just so's people understand it's not 'funny ha-ha'.

9. Things like this make me die a little inside.
I just cannot stand it.

I just can't even begin to understand how some people are so cruel...towards animals, children, or anyone.

16. I saw a turkey farm yesterday and today
TRUST ME... you do NOT want to eat turkey.

So the first time I drove by there was a PILE of birds outside each of the sheds... like 20 dead birds.

The second time I drove by there were Mexicans picking up the dead turkeys and throwing them in a cart. When they picked up the turkeys I could see that they were half rotten and the Mexicans were picking them up with BARE HANDS. :scared:

The third time I drove by there were TWO DUMPSTERS of turkeys right next to the road. I could see them up close, and not only were they half rotten but they were all bloody from having been pecked by the other turkeys. They were also covered in flies.

This morning I drove by the same farm, and there was a PILE of birds outside each of the sheds....

:barf:

18. ConAgra owns Butterball
I have stopped buying Butterball Turkey ever since I read the book Fast Food Nation. I read the label and if it says ConAgra foods, I put it back on the shelf. The book came out about 5 years ago, I think.

20. Butterball turkey is almost inedible anyway
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 11:32 PM by gwbsamoron
I mean, it's okay. It's still a #$&^ turkey. But there are a lot of good ones out there that make a Butterball seem like Morgan Spurlock's months-old MacDonald's fries.
I hope this was a multum in parvo because I have trouble explaining myself.

25. Agreed, and it's not just turkeys, either...
NOTE: No links below go to graphic material, however, the links on those pages do. What's written here is worth reading if only just to see the pattern of abuse that people working in factory farm situations (not all workers, but obviously far too many) inflict upon the animals.
