Do you use a PDA?
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 08:24 PM by bertha katzenengel
I'm thinking I'd like to get one in a year or two. Not necessarily for a phone, definitely not for email, but maybe for internet -- but primarily as an address book and memo holder. My CRS* gets worse by the minute.

Do you use one? What kind? What all do you use it for?

Thanks

1. I've got a Palm Treo 700p
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 08:15 PM by Kutjara
It's a combined phone/PDA. I have it synchronized with my Mac so that I have my contacts and calendar entries with me when I'm out and about. I use it for sending short emails (the thumbkeys are better than trying to write onscreen with a stylus, IMHO) and texts, getting info from the Net that I need on the road, and as a phone.

It's so usable and functional that I find I don't really need to carry a laptop with me to meetings anymore. I have it setup to access my work computer as well, so I can access any documents I need from that machine wherever I am.

The 'p' designation means it uses the PalmOS operating system. The '700w' uses Microsoft Windows Mobile. Which one you choose will depend on your personal preference. I prefer PalmOS for mobile work. It's faster and less cumbersome.

4. If you use Excel a lot...
...you should look at the 700w model. As I said in my edit to my original post, that version comes with Windows Mobile. It has MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel built in. The applications are fine for the kind of things you'd be doing on the road, but you'd get tired trying to input a lot of data on that tiny screen. The good thing is you can synchronize the Treo with your desktop files very easily.

3. No. It's one of those things (like an iPod) that I know I'm SUPPOSED to
want, but could never bring myself to actually desiring.

5. "Supposed to want?"
Redstone, honestly. Do we care? :7

I just. Can't. Remember. Shit. I need help. But I'm waiting until the devices are intuitive enough to remind me to tie my shoes, tell me to take the washcloth out of the refrigerator, and show me where my keys are.

:hi:

PS I didn't want an iPod until I got one as a Christmas gift. It wound up not working, but in the brief time it did work, I got hooked. It's a fun thing.

everytime I hear "PDA" = public display of affection. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to it meaning something else!

7. Yeah, I have an HP iPAQ. Use it for a lot, but primarily as an ebook
reader recently, also for WiFi internet access on occasion. Keeps me occupied on shopping trips. I run Familiar Linux on it.

13. I can't even keep track of my television remote control thingy...
I'd lose a PDA the first day I had it, so I'll stick to making notes on paper to economize my losses when I lose the notes.

16. I was in a store yesterday and saw a universal remote that was about the
same size as the top of a nearby toaster oven (well, not as deep of course, but length and width were about the same).

That, and the idea of duck taping my old pager to the remote control. I'll do it as soon as I can find both at the same time. ;)

26. It just goes to show ya...
"It just goes to show ya...it's always something! If it's not one thing, it's another!" - Roseanne Rosannadanna

I read Gilda Radner's book years ago that was titled "It's always something" a memoir about her life and struggle with her cancer. Damn, I miss that crazy woman and feel the pain Gene Wilder feels today, everyday, because they were in love in a huge way and absolutely perfect for each other!

of those salvage stores that pick up insurance losses after fires/floods, etc.

28. Read it, it's as much a love story as a story of her ordeal.
If I admitted I didn't cried when I read it I'd be lying. Another moving love story memoir type book was George Burns' book Gracie: A Love Story. They were another couple made in heaven.
