Just saw "The Departed" - better than "Goodfellas" |
|
Okay, now that I've got your attention... Maybe too strong a statement. Goodfellas will remain the standard in this genre, no doubt, but I think this film is actually tighter in some respects (mainly artistically) and definitely deeper insofar as being a meditation on justice vs. revenge in our society, futility, and inescapable corruption, yada yada yada. I especially liked the very last shot. Of the film, not to the head.
Seriously, it was hilarious/violent/relevant/excellent. Just check out the soundtrack, for christsakes. The plot is fairly convoluted, and there are holes; much discussion about whether they are intentional or due to editing out a good 20-30 minutes, according to reports (hopefully they will be on the DVD!). Mark Wahlberg cracks me up. Jack is a bit too loopy in the last half hour (as usual - he annoys me in most films because, like Matt Damon, he always seems to play the same character). And I like Leo again now. IMHO, he gave the best performance, and it was his best to date - just excellent. Plus, this movie has the most point blank shots to the head EVER. Kick ass.
Definitely the best since Goodfellas.
I also think that Alex Baldwin should portray Al Gore in the future. They have the same paunchiness going on. And have I ever told you that Noah Wyle should play John Lennon in any biopic...? I've been saying that since like 1995.

would like to hear others' opinion, if anybody has seen it yet. I am still thinking about it this afternoon! Especially Leo's character. It's sticking with me. Leo was fabulous.

3. He was good. DiCaprio, I mean. Certainly the best I've ever seen him. |

The movie was very enjoyable, if you can say that about a movie where a dozen people or more get shot in the head. Moved like a bullet! What was the other Rolling Stones song in there, anyway - the one that wasn't Street Fighting Man. I've forgotten, but I remember that I liked it.

4. I absolutely loved it! Went to see it twice this week! |

I agree; his best since "Goodfellas," my all-time favorite movie. The last shot--I thought it was perfect! I love Scorsese's films and see every one of them, and if he doesn't get his long-deserved Oscar for this one, I'm going to be pissed. Real pissed. Everything was great: the dialogue, story, acting, soundtrack, cinematography, etc.
