1. Great list. Off the top of my head, I'd add....
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 11:01 AM by SteppingRazor
Alejandro Escovedo
Bright Eyes and the entire Nebraska mob on his label
My Morning Jacket
The New Pornographers
Wilco
A bit older, but if you don't know Sleater-Kinney, you suck! ;)
Animal Collective
Spoon
TV on the Radio
The Hold Steady

That's just off the top of my head

P.S. Dude, some of those bands on there are not exactly "good music that's out there now." I mean, The Jayhawks? They're from the 80s. That said, mega-bonus points for including Sufjan Stevens, the best songwriter no one's heard of.

Jayhawks have released some recent CDs. Louris is also part of Golden Smog, which I wasn't as impressed by.

I also like The Hold Steady (heard only samples though,) TV On The Radio, Sleater-Kinney, My Morning Jacket, and Wilco.

3. When I did my year-end wrap up for 2005, My Morning Jacket's Z...
topped my Top 10. It's lost a little luster over time, but it's still great.

4. Yeah, I have the CD
I like it more than some of their influences, in fact. It's one of those CDs you can get something new out of each time IMO.

10. I think too many have heard of Sufjan Stevens to call him
the best songwriter nobody has ever heard of.

I think the title probably belongs to Adam Gnade of Adam Gnade and The Confederate Yankees right now. He does this magical talking-songs thing were he doesn't really sing as much as he tells you a story, much in the style of a troubadour. Everything is timed and set-out so that they perfectly match the backing tracks.

If you have MySpace you can hear him here:

http://www.myspace.com/gnade

The band's website is here, but doesn't have any songs on it:

7. Macy Gray
I love her music, so much that it makes me like some of Outkast's stuff off the Idlewild cd.

There's a Detroit band I really like called "His Name Is Alive". It's an electro-funk sound, not a religious band.

14. OK, just a few more
Edited on Tue Oct-24-06 01:05 PM by mvd
bif sent me a list that I will go through. I have some more of my own here:

Taylor Swift - young country artist who's just as promising as pop teens like Cheyenne Kimball, Sonya Kitchell, Brie Larson, Hope Partlow, JoJo, and Skye Sweetnam. Her music feels real and not part of the big Nashville money making machine. Her self-titled CD is one of the best country releases of 2006.

Miss Derringer - sounds weird, but I like it so far. I might give the CD a try.

Tara Jane O'Neil - unique, chiming guitar style. Another one to check out more.

The Be Good Tanyas

Catie Curtis

Sister Hazel

Nina Nastasia

Sparklehorse

Anne McCue

Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3

My Chemical Romance (found them on the full album listening party, and it's more entertaining emo than usual. Definitely liked it more than Sparta.)

22. I bought my first Built To Spill album this year
You in Reverse is the CD. While a few songs are a bit long, it's a very good CD. Sonic Youth also released a good CD this year, but I can't completely judge them as a whole yet.

25. I know, but when I think of "old standards", I think of well-known
songs sung by the likes of Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Mel Torme.
