OMG! "Wife Swap" on Fox is hilarious tonight! |
|

Fundie from Kentucky switches with "Yankee" Jews. The fundie is just so confused by Judaism. She wasn't sure if Jews were atheists or not.
Of course, I shouldn't make too much fun, since I don't Fundies are completely foreign to me, and obviously to the Jewish mom.
I can't believe she just said, "Eating kosher is not the American way of life." I don't understand how the kosher store is so confusing. I shop at the kosher store sometimes.
"All this Arabic stuff...Hebrew...whatever..."
No wonder our country is fucked.

1. "Trading Spouses," not "Wife Swap" |
|
And, irony of ironies? Orthodox Jews (as shown on the show) can't watch TV tonight...

3. Whatever, all those reality shows are the same to me. |
|
I thought about adding that to my post, but I realized too late to edit.

15. F.Y.I. - "Wife Swap" was started by Channel 4 over here |
|
The implicit connotations being pretty obvious to those who picked the name.
That franchise was sold to an American T.V. company (I've no idea which one).
It's the only "reality" television that I watch - I'm strangely adicted to it, even though I know that that's wicked. :eyes:

I was shocked when southern granny decided she liked the jewish mom. Did NOT see that coming.

Of course, I've witnessed weird shit like that happen within my own family. Like when my perpetually late friend showed up half an hour early to meet me for a concert...I walked into the house and there was my dirty hippie friend Chris sitting there with my family eating dinner, wearing his skirt, pot leaf shirt and court jester hat over his matted (not dreaded long hair). My conservative family LOVES him.

9. God, I love people like that. |
|
It's un-selfconsciousness of a kind that's just downright beautiful. And cool that your family likes him, too.

I am a staunch atheist, but I was sympathetic to the Jewish family. Those relatives in Kentucky were horrible - the worst of America. Uneducated, incurious, insular, judgemental, closed-minded, ignorant.
Edited to add: and bad, bad hair above their pinched, smug faces.

8. Just don't judge Kentucky |
|
by a few hicks that live there.
Remember, this is the state that gave us Hunter S. Thompson, Muhammad Ali, Bill Monroe, Loretta Lynn...the list is endless.

I'm from Texas. I get it.
I just meant THOSE people. Not that they were representative of Kentucky. They're all over America, even in Manhattan (though, admittedly, fewer in number!).

21. What about the coal mining Kentucky couple on Amazing Race? |
|
Seems neither of them has been outside the south before...but that couple is not nearly as repulsive as the one woman, while the race was in India, said she could not wait to be back around rich people.

I've gone through most of my life with people finding out I'm Jewish and then being surprised that I'm so normal like them. Funny, ain't it? Do you think there's anywhere I could see it online?

12. I think Fox has some of their shows online. |
|
My family's Catholic but the area we live in is so Jewish that the non-Jewish kids at my HS used to joke that if you weren't Jewish, you were an honorary Jew. I've been to way more Bar & Bat Mitzvah's than confirmations.

11. We were approached by that show... |
|
My wife and I are part of something called "The Compact" and we've vowed not to buy new items for an entire year. (Save for food, medicine, and underwear.)
They wanted us to swap with a consumerist Republican family for $20k.
I told then where to stick the offer. It just seems CRAZY to me.

|
Then turned it off. Very disappointed. When you name a show "Wife Swar" it sets up certain expectations. None of which were met.

This is going to be good...I just cannot imagine not knowing ANYTHING about Judaism!!! Then again I guess there aren't many Jews in rural Kentucky.
