I loathe the darkness of winter.....
Snow, I can live with. Cold, I can dress for that. But dammit, I hate it when it gets dark earlier and earlier... it saps my energy, affects my mood, makes me reclusive. Give me June, any day. *sigh*

10. Me too
I like the change in temperature but by January it gets old and snow is good as long as I don't have to shovel it, but I think the darkness affects my mood more than I thought because I essentially spent the whole day wrapped up in a fleece blanket, not wanting to do anything other than play on the computer. I guarantee my dad will not turn the heat on until Thanksgiving...because he's cheap despite the fact that it is 60 degrees in my room right now

You hit the nail on the head, though... it's the urge to hibernate, or something. To curl up and be warm and hide. I don't get that usually until mid-October, and it goes away again in about mid-March...

Naturally, I live in Maine! By mid winter I don't even open my curtains... unless I'm out in the weather I just pretend it's summer outside. Some day I will move back west to Oregon or Washington, where I can grow roses and cherries. Until then...like you...sigh...

47. I can sympathise
I'm quite far up north (north-central Alberta), and it's pretty much bankers hours for daylight.

As we're warming due to climate change, it's getting greyer. It used to be that it was -20 and very bright, but now that the winters are much milder, we have much less sun. :-(

67. What a weird thing....
I'm trying to conceptualize more hours of "warm dark" like you have on summer nights... somehow, that doesn't make me as sleepy. Maybe 'cause I'd have the windows open? Maybe it's more a matter of feeling cooped up, in the house, in lots of clothes, that gets me, instead of the actual lack of light. Hrm.

68. The shift you feel is all part of the natural turning of the seasonal wheel...
we are moving into the darkness, when we get to shift our energy inwards, towards introspection and stillness.
Embrace this time for the Wisdom it brings. Take long candlelit baths, read a good book curled up by the fire, write your dreams and visions for your life in your journal, drink tea, meditate, be renewed by your OWN inner light...

70. Sunlight and heat for me, too!
I spent 2 winters in the Caribbean where it's always 12 hours of daylight and about 80 degrees. We had reggae Xmas Carols on the CD player, and drank Pina Coladas instead of Egg Nog.

Best. Winters. Ever.

I also spent 5 winters in London, England. It turns dark there at about 3:30 pm by the middle of December, absolutely hateful!! But the summers are awesome (when it's not raining that is!) because it's light until 11pm.

So with knowledge of both extremes, I say go for the tropics! However, the Caribbean has bad hurricanes in the fall, so now my goal is to live in the Med--either off the coast of Italy or Greece.

No more vampire winters for me, Folks!!!

78. I hear you.
It's the same every year, but I never, ever get used to how quickly it gets dark in the winter. So depressing.

80. Me too.
I hear wonderful things about those lamps that mimic sunlight. I just can't afford one.

83. I rarely see the sun for 4 months every year.
My office doesn't have windows, and I don't leave until after dark. So I agree with you entirely. x(

We need a DU group vacation to a tropical island somewhere. Any suggestions?

84. I loathe the time change that makes me drive home in the dark.

85. The dreaded half of the year
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 09:40 AM by bikebloke
Hot and sunny is my time of the year.

I don't like pulling on layers of clothes for the commute on my bike. Then coming home in the dark. Though after 14 years I've had to buy a new light (they stopped making the bulbs, and the only place I could find them is from the UK). The new illumination is brighter and should allow me the pedal harder (for heat) through one dark stretch. I hate riding in the dark with my hands out in front of me. ;-)

Or not. Glad to hear you were able to find a new, good, light, though!

93. Mmm.... fireplaces are fantastic
I so wish we had one, or a wood stove! Eventually, that will happen. Enjoy it!

91. I'm weird; I love it
I find it cozy. Plus I have a large office on the fourth floor with three windows that face east and south and heat I can't regulate (work on a college campus; all heat is regulated at the power plant). It can be very uncomfortable on sunny winter days and would be even worse if I couldn't open the windows.

I don't think I'd like it all year but I really don't mind it when it gets dark earlier.

I think that for some people, it definitely is comforting and cozy! I'm glad that you can enjoy it! :)

95. I hear you
I have seasonal affective disorder too. Rainy, dark days just get me sooooo down. It's like the black clouds just invade my brain.

96. Ooh, I'm sorry to hear that....
I'm very affected by the weather, but I've never had it diagnosed as anything. What do you do to treat it? Full-spectrum lamps and the like?
