Third year in a row now, no trick or treaters!
We don't want kiddies begging for stuff, it's not that we hate the semi-holiday, just that we don't
care to participate. So we leave the lights off and basically ignore it.
It isn't like it was 20 years ago, fortunately.

1. I think that's really sad

I enjoyed the trick-or-treaters who came by our house. It was a lot of fun...and a nice way to meet more of the neighbors and wish their parents, standing in the background, a happy Halloween!

It's really too bad that you couldn't enjoy your day as well.

2. I got to say, I hate answering the door.
I loved Halloween when I was a kid, I loved taking my kids around when they were young but now it's just a pain in the butt. I do it because of all those who made it wonderful for my kids when they had no reason to.

3. I almost had that - except that this year I finally got a trick or treater!
Otherwise I'd have a perfect 3 year record.

I was tempted to give her the entire two bags of peanut butter cups I bought, since I figured she was gonna be it (and how sad is it to be trick or treating by yourself? How sad for her) - I should have just done it, and probably made her lonely night all that much better.

Though it probably turns out that she's allergic to peanut butter.

11. Now THERE's some compassion and understanding. Wish the OP had some.

5. I do appreciate you turning off your lights
I just got back from trick or treating with my kids and was surprised by the number of people 1) with porch lights on and 2) Halloween decorations who either chose not to answer the door, or left little signs saying they weren't giving out candy.

8. I think I didn't explain it very well, we don't object to the concept,
some of my fond memories are from VERY long ago Halloweens but sadly it just isn't the same. Somebody on TV today made a comment that I found apropos: "We tell our kids to never take candy from strangers, the we send them out on Halloween to do it..."

What a shame we even need to worry about petty stuff like this.

9. For the record, I'm OK with you or anyone else not...
doing Halloween, for whatever the reason. You certainly don't have to give the neighbor kids candy. But if you aren't going to do it, turn off your porch light. And don't go all out on the decorations and then leave little notes saying no candy. Lame.

13. I got it...we don't do any decorations. What few kids live in our
neighborhood know we don't get into it, they're cool with that. No problem for any of us. ;-)

7. We had a shitload of kids here.
But only about 6 from the neighbothood. The rest carpooled it in for charity handouts.

10. Sorry, I think that's a crappy attitude. Why shouldn't the kids have some fun?
Jesus, do we have to "take a stand" of every fucking thing?

What, it'll KILL you to buy three bucks worth of candy and help brighten a kid's day?

15. But don't you think it's a little suspicious that Halloween only a week
before the election?

It's obviously a Rovian distraction.

12. I always leave my light off too
Actually mine is burned out right now. I don't mind the little kids trick or treating but I think it should be limited to those under age 12 or so. I can't stand seeing older kids (usually with no costumes either) that I just stopped doing it. Besides I always ate too much candy!
