Halloween declared dead in France.....
partly due to anti-Americanism.

Sounds like they just couldn't get into the "spirit" of the holiday.

:shrug:

1. I don't think Halloween's ever been a big deal across the pond.

4. I saw many groups of children out last night
while I was driving home from work. I have never seen that before.

11. No calls at my house at all
(southern England), though normally I only get 1 or 2. I've already been having fireworks outside, though, for about a week, including some before dark (what's the point?), and they are going off again as I type. Seems like Guy Fawkes and his death has beaten the pagan practices.

2. Anti-consumerism, too;
Europeans in general and the French in particular seem much less inclined to define themselves by the things they spend money on than Americans do, and the French quite rightly took a somewhat jaundiced view of this recently imported ritual that seemed designed solely to boost sales of costumes, candy, and things made out of orange and black plastic.

3. LOL! Not where we were last night!!! I live on the french riviera near Cannes
Edited on Wed Nov-01-06 05:34 AM by radwriter0555
and our nearby town's streets were FILLED with goblins and ghouls and LOTS of little skeletons and witches and fairies and devils of all ages! Seriously some streets were elbow to elbow jostling for goodies being tossed from windows and handed from doorways. Stores were wide open, kids were lined up waiting for their bon bons!

Then, many of us got tables at the restaurants on the square and our kids all ran amock having the time of their little lives chasing, running around with old friends and new friends, as the parents sat and had wine, a little dinner... then, gorged with candies, some of the kids managed a few bites of pizza or some frites... and we were all home by 9:30...

It was one of the best halloween's I've had in years!

Trust me, halloween isn't dead in France!

7. That's nice to know.
When I read this article, I felt sorry for the French children who would not get to use their imaginations to plan their costumes or have the fun of going out with their friends to "trick or treat".
