Can you remember your first best friend's name?
Mine was Tony. We were four or five. I kinda remember what he looked like, but most of all I remember that his favorite food was "pasgedi".

She used to bring Nickelodeon magazine to recess. Unfortunately I had to move in 4th grade, but I got back into contact with her a couple of times over the years. She's a cool chick, and it was weird to see how much we still had in common so many years down the road.

It was Donnie. He still lives a few miles from me. We are no longer friends, and he's a one legged crack addict. It saddens me to see him in the shape he's in now.

I still love him like a brother, and wish him well. I just had to break it off some years back as i could no longer enable him in any way.

Montana. Leon lived 3 miles further in the sticks than we did. Some Saturdays I'd look down the long dirt road that lead to our house to see Leon (who was in 2nd grade) riding up on his tricycle!

48. Meghan. We were six, and she lived above the "fishy"
smelling restaurant a block down from me, just past the backyard with the mean dog. She had a dirty blond bob and blue eyeglasses, and we played in her backyard behind the restaurant. We used the tubes that cigars came in, that were discarded nearby, as pretend test tubes. The test tubes were filled with a "formula" that could turn someone into a monster. We took turns being monster, heroine, and hero. She had a much older brother with Downs and an older sister we rarely saw. Once she and her brother put curlers in my hair--but it stayed very straight.

She moved away after first grade, and I was sad, because we had a lot of fun.

we used to stay up all night playing thundercats and fraggle rock. he was one year older than me and his sister was the same age as mine. at first his mom was my daycare mom and when they moved out of town we'd spend holidays together, then they moved to ohio.

i now live a block away from the house he used to live in and i still think about him all the time.

i think i've found his family in ohio but part of me is afraid to call them, i'm a wuss that way.

We were joined at the hip in first grade.

We were on a constant search for the "Bunny Man", a mythical scary man in the woods around our houses.

Thank God we never found him, and he never found us!

When I think about that little boy and girl we were, roaming around the woods, I just can't believe we survived!

54. Ben and Chere
They were my two best friends from pre-school. I was so little that I can't remember much about them from those days. We ended up going to Elementary through High school together, but we didn't really stay friends with each other. I remember once having the "My dad could beat up your dad" competition with Ben after he initiated it, and I didn't really understand the point of it. (See, I've always been a pacifist at heart...) Chere (pronounced like "Sha-ree" with an accent mark over the second "e")- was sweet, but I don't remember a whole lot about when we were childhood friends except, oddly, for this time she fell off of the swingset and I had to run and get help. (I guess that sticks in my head because it was scary.) I ran into her a few months ago when I was voting in the Democratic primary election that was being held at the local elementary school. She's married, teaching elementary school, and as pretty as ever.
