2. If Martha Stewart can spend a few months in jail, then |

Coulter can spend a few years. She's a wretched bitch and I don't either listen to or read what she has to say, but anybody that hateful could benefit from a lesson in humility. I'm not particularly hopeful though...

5. Why do they need to talk to her? |
|
She either voted in the wrong precinct or she didn't. She either signed in at the wrong precinct or she didn't. If they've got her signature at the wrong one, and don't have her signature at the right one, then she's guilty.

6. They need to give her the opportunity to explain herself. |
|
After all, Bill Clinton's penis might have voted in the wrong precinct to frame Ann Coulter.

8. Suspects don't get the right to explain themselves. |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-01-06 11:58 PM by Nevernose
At least not after the first semi-polite question. After the first one, suspects get their first semi-polite taste of police brutality, go to jail for the weekend, and then talk some family member into posting bail (okay, maybe this is just my personal experience speaking. But I'm not bitter). Shit on Coulter, and shit on her "her lawyers don't want to talk" bullshit.
Oh, sorry, that was a Clinton's Penis Joke, wasn't it? Well shit on Ann Coulter anyway.

Of course, the government apparently has the right to waterboard her.
Hooray for civil liberties!
May she never speak again!

11. When did I mention torturing her? |
|
Whether she speaks or not is just plain irrelevant; they either have the evidence to prosecute her or they don't. If they have the evidence, and she can't provide a really good justification, they should charge her with a crime. Interviewing a suspect is purely a favor, and often a solicitation for a confession, but ultimately just a doublecheck to make sure they don't have an alibi or a really good excuse.
If she had an alibi or a really good excuse, she'd probably mention it, don't you think? There's a distinct difference between not incriminating oneself unfer the fifth amendment and the desire to exonerate oneself.
Both the Coultergeist and the DA (or PA in Florida, I believe) shold either put up or shut up. If the government has a case, they should take the charges before a grand jury. If she has a defense, she should offer it in the hopes that they don't take it before a grand jury.

I do not support torturing anyone. I do find it interesting when people are confronted with the policies they would inflict upon others. (i.e. Ann and her support of interrogation techniques without limitation).
Ann Coulter is a clown. Nevertheless, she does not have to be a witness against herself. You are right that the information is either there or not there, but it good investigative practice to explore the entirety of a situation. Prosecutors have a duty to ensure that they're prosecuting cases in good faith. That does not always happen, but I do not begrudge the prosecution's choice to seek additional information by offering Ann Coulter the opportunity to cooperate.
You're right that it's more simplistic than other crimes. It's certainly not a class action or a capital crime. Nevertheless, the prosecutor does not control the outcome of the case. He or she only makes arguments to the court. And it is his or her duty to ensure that they have the best case possible. That involves going beyond the obvious facts.
