seriously. if the channel needed changing, Dad would have me get up to change it. We had one of those motorized antenna's where you 'dialed in' the signal.

so, Dad wanted the channel changed and it would be me up in front of the TV 'dialing in' the antenna until he could determine when the picture came in good

2. Snow plow
When I was a toddler we lived in a tenament so there wasn't much shoveling, just dig out the car parked at the curb and put an old chair or couch in the spot to hold it. My parents took care of that.

But as soon as we moved to the burbs (I was in second grade) and had a substaintial drive way I was put to work.

At one point my parents decided to expand the driveway. I pleaded for them to reconsider and they said they'd compromise by buying a snow blower.

They never did get that snow blower. :evilfrown:

3. Substitute Paperboy for when my brother was doing school activities
He was 4 grades ahead of me so it got to the point that I would do half of his route every night and get paid shit per paper while he got all the money and tips out of it.

And oh, I hate newspaper print - grosses me out!

4. Dishwasher
Who needs an automatic when they have a daughter around? We had one...but this was way back in the Dark Ages, so if the dishes had any chance at all of getting clean, I pretty much had to wash 'em before they went in.

6. General dogsbody.
I cleaned the entire house every week, cooked all the meals, took care of my mother (a sick and twisted abusive bitch that had arthritis and was spoiled rotten from the time she was diagnosed), did the grocery shopping, mowed the lawn, painted fences..... you name it, I did it.

21. ouch, man, sounds like the life my mom got stuck with.
Her Mom was never home, and she basically raised her sisters and brother.

There were four of us, so it got split pretty evenly.

I'm sorry you grew up that way, it's not right for a kid to go through that. Welcome to DU, BTW:hi:

Luckily I had a good Dad, but there was little he could do about my so-called mother. I have a great stepmother now, too.

8. I had several jobs as a child.
I too was the remote control, and I was also the Downey Fabric Softener dispenser (we have a two story house with the washer in the basement), the wildlife removal technician (we had cats and they loved to bring in treats from outdoors and let them loose), and the breaking and entering specialist (I was tiny and could fit through the cat hole when we locked the keys in the house).

33. That rug was huge, man.
One of those rugs made of flat braids. It was red & black, and had 3-inch fringe all the way around. I'd get on my hands and knees with spaghetti tongs and go all the way around, combing it out.

Strange, strange housekeeping request from a woman who didn't keep house worth a damn.

12. I had to get my mom an ice water, after she had already come upstairs.
Never understood why she never could bring it up with her.

I also had to clean all the wood floors in the house on my hands and knees, drying the part I had just cleaned with a separate towel. I apparently was extremely good at this.

The weirdest job my mom ever had me do was climb a ladder, scrape of any tiny little spec of paint of the windows with a razor blade, and then clean the window with window cleaner.

I was raised in an Italian/Catholic household if that gives anyone out there flashbacks.

13. MrG was the remote as well...sometimes having to stand for an
hour and switch channels. Once he turned 12 he was his father's chauffer. His childhood stunk.

My job? This is really awful and something I would never do to my kids. I used to have to put lotion on my mom's feet every night. And then brush her hair. And Christina Crawford thought she had it bad. :hi:

16. Fed rabbits and cleaned out their hutches; same with the dog.
We had a lot of rabbits (pets to me, food to my Dad) and a hunting beagle; it was my job (even in the dead of winter) to make sure they were fed, watered and clean. Their water would freeze in the bowls, so I'd take hot water with me to melt the ice out, then refill. Would let the dog out of his winterized house (it really was like a miniature house) and put him on the run, then clean out everything up, feed and water. Had to do it every day, from the time I was about 6 or 7. Hard work now that I think about it.

22. Animal caretaker
We had dogs, cats and horses - I did all the feeding and watering and as well as exercising the horses and keeping the barn clean. I patrolled the fences regularly and repaired them. I also did all the first aid that was needed on them - I wanted to be a vet as a kid and our vet knew that. He taught me to do a lot - bandaging wounds, giving shots, worming horses, etc.

I loved my job. My siblings did boring things like vacuuming and washing dishes.

We only had one bathroom that I had to clean.

I didn't mind too much, because I could close the door and have some privacy.

26. Firestarter.
I was the only one who could get a fire going in the fireplace. Fortunately I didn't have to clean out the ashes afterward - which is probably why I like woodburning fireplaces to this day, and my mother hates them.

If I messed up the lawn, at least no one would see it. :D

I remember the early cable boxes that had a slider to change the channel. My dad would say, "Get up and change the channel." My mom would complain that I moved the slider too fast. :D

32. I was the Remote as well...
My dad is now 80 and we still laugh about my being called from another room to change the channel. One year I gave him a very nicely wrapped universal remote for Christmas...just in case he lost the other one.

Nice to know so many other people spent their childhood this way!!!:hi:

34. Table setter and dishwasher operator
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 02:38 PM by Sequoia
From 6th grade to high school we girls had to work in the kitchen of the boarding school. In the summer is was canning until the apples came in and forget about playing outdoors or going swiming. Work, work, work all the time at 15 cents an hour. But hey, "work builds character", and "idle hands are the devil's workshop."
