Most bands have 3, maybe 4 good albums in them
Then they put out crap with a capital K.

Led Zeppelin defied the curve and put out 5 good ones.

The Beatles did 6.

But bands like Yes? Close to the Edge was their last good one, and that was #4.

VanHalen? Stopped at 4 too.

Pink Floyd pretty much jumped the shark after Animals. Sure, The Wall mezmorized us when we were 15 - but most of The Wall is filler.

1. The Beastie Boys have 6 good mainstream albums
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 03:24 PM by flvegan
and are still going.

"License to Ill"
"Paul's Boutique"
"Check Your Head"
"Ill Communication"
"Hello, Nasty"
"To the 5 Boroughs"

Of course, if not for Zeppelin, "License to Ill" might not have ever existed, as a good amount of it was sampled from them.

Edited for forgetting "Check Your Head" like a moron.

2. The Beasties would have been better to stick to EPs
All of the albums you mentioned could have been great EPs, as half the tunes were good.

5. The last two are filled with filler.
And you're missing "Check Your Head", which is a great album.

9. I did, as I was rushing.
Check is one of my faves. I disagree about the "filler" opinion, though. To me, both Nasty and Boroughs are excellent BBoy works.

3. Actually, I think *most* bands only have one GREAT album in them.
Examples: Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, etc.

i saw them tour on both gish and siamese dream, and they were FAR BETTER on gish than on siamese dream...the massive studio production work by Vig notwithstandinding, they sucked ass on the siamese dream tour.

33. Siamese Dream
captured what i appreciated about them live. the Gish stuff was great but for me it didn't have the same strength to it. Maybe it them coming into their own, a group. You are never gonna convince me otherwise so don't even try. Mayonnaise is the best.

I still heart you. :)

39. Ok,
music is one of things i never really argue about because it is based on personal taste more than anything.

So, as i was Sublime and Alice in Chains, your thoughts? Please don't tell me you thought they too, had only one Great album.

40. I never liked Sublime at all.
I thought they were musically kind of lame.

Alice in Chains was a terrific band who made excellent music and had a seriously talented lead singer. It is a damned shame what happened. Fucking drugs.

And I was only kidding about you being "wrong". As you say, music is totally subjective. i'm just taking the piss. :D

Vs. is great. Vitology is almost as great as Vs. No Code is really great. Yeild is less great than No Code, but greater than Vitology. The newest one is greater than Ten.

Does that help?

12. I would say most bands don't have ONE good album in them

Then there's a bunch that have one, somewhat less that have two, and so on down the line, till you eventually get to a theoretical band that cannot put out a crappy album, no matter how many albums it produces.

13. Correction. By far, most bands have zero good albums in them.
Most fans have the ability only to really listen to zero songs.

Most fans do not have the ability to accept change in the artists they like.

I count 6 greats:

Dirty Mind
1999
Purple Rain
Sign 'O the Times (a double album at that)
Around the World in a Day
The Gold Experience

A fair number of near greats.

And some merely OK (and yes, some unmitigated crap)

46. All of the 'Dan's first 6 albums are really excellent.
Yes, even Can't Buy a Thrill.

Gaucho wasn't BAD, but it lacked the sincere cynicism of The Royal Scam, the shocking imagery of Aja, the pop brilliance of Pretzel Logic, the grooving jams of Countdown to Ecstasy.

And the two albums from this century aren't bad, either; they just lack the original brilliance of the 'Dan from about '72 to '77.
