Gave him another chance, watching him on The Daily Show. Stupid comedy. Stupid act. I know a lot of people like him, and find him funny, but I am not one who does. Not gonna waste my nearly non-existent income on this movie. :puke:

2. Couldn't stand Kauffman either.
I like smart, brainy comedy, not stupid idiotic comedy. (And BTW, I am using my own definition of the two.)

4. Yeah. I hated Kauffman's comedy, but I was sad when he died.
I never celebrate the untimely demise of someone.

11. I never liked Kaufman either
He has legions of pretentious fans who say "you just don't get him!". Which I say to that, yes, I do, and he's still as funny as an infected hangnail.

The fact that Milos Forman made a movie about him speaks volumes about how far pseudointellectual 'art' pretensions can go in building one's undeserved reputation. Never has so mediocre a talent been celebrated quite the way Kaufman was.

It takes a special kind of asshole to be even more annoying than Tony Danza on a sitcom.

18. Maybe is price he pay...
...for make bad movie?

Dunno. I ain't seen "Borat," but while I admire in theory S.B.C's kind of confrontational humor (like Andy Kaufman's), which is based on his real-life straight men-- and women-- not being in on the joke, it still makes me damned uncomfortable. Because I don't enjoy seeing hapless people being made fools of, or embarrassed, however much they may be despicable, racist, whatever. Frankly, I feel the same way about those "Daily Show" interviews, which are essentially the same thing (and owe a lot to Kaufman). While I think Cohen and John Stewart are to be applauded for uncovering what they do, I also think that their targets are rather too easy. But in the end, my squeamishness at what they do is probably just a reflection of my own (admittedly vast) insecurities. So I'd rather watch Bill Hicks, or Richard Pryor, or...

9. I think the act is good for maybe one joke.
Maybe, on a good day. There are things that he is trying to get across that are valid, but there has to be another way to do it besides boring the hell out of people in the process.

12. reviews look good, though
I actually would like to see this. Usually I have a limited tolerance for gross, but the satire sounds great.

23. I am going to see it tonight...
I am sort of being dragged into it, but after reading the reviews, which are almost entirely good, I am actually looking forward to it. I love good satire!

I'll report back after I see it.

15. I was thinking I'd like him until I was told that in his film, he goes into
an antique shop and basically breaks half the store. Ok, so he paid for the damage, but antiques aren't your everyday Wal Mart crap, a dime a dozen. As someone who adores antiques, I was appalled.

22. I'm with you on that!
I also adore antiques, and collect them. My feeling is, basically, that EVERYTHING was made better, and with more heart, in the past! And I love the sheer survival-aspect of fine antiques. You may not like a particular piece or period, but you gotta give some ornate, gilded, hideous side table props simply for enduring unscathed for 150 years.

But I guess it depends on what kind of "antiques store" Borat destroys. Christ knows, I've wanted to pulls the walls down in more than a few shops full of over-priced junk being passed off as "antiques." I know a few serious antiques dealers who will agree with me on this!

16. I saw him on TDS last night, too.
I think he truly angered Stewart. The guy has horrible comedic timing...not knowing when to break character or 'make amends' is paramount to being a good comedian.

There was a Russian comedian back in the '80s with a somewhat similar schtick that was much funnier. Wish I could remember his name.

17. I didn't see the show, but I doubt that.
He's been on before in his Ali G persona, and they got along great.

Also, TDS contributers (Ed Helms and Samantha Bee in particular) use pretty similar interview tactics all the time, so it's not as if he would not recognize the style of humor employed.

Anyway, I think the Borat segments on Da Ali G show were funny, but I have my doubts about stretching it out to movie length, so I'll wait for it to appear on Netflix.

19. Stewart was NOT angry--he was laughing his ass off.
And I find his timing absolutely brilliant, along with the fact that he never, ever breaks character. The movie has gotten unanymously great reviews; I can't wait to see it.

And I didn't see it as Stewart getting mad at all. In fact, I thought he was cracking up.

24. Yakov Smirnoff! What a tool.
"In USA you can be life of party! In Soviet Union, party is your life!" I don't know if that's an actual Yakov joke, but it's what I always say when someone asks me to describe Yakov Smirnoff. Which happens more frequently than you might imagine.

Maybe I need to move in wider circles...

26. Smirnoff was the source of the best Michael Jackson joke ...
at least I heard it first from him.

referring to Jackson "What a country! Where but in America can a poor black boy grow up to become a rich white woman?"
